Definition

The Weymouth Public Libraries is in need of a proven professional and self-starter who is interested in being a key member of a progressive, dynamic library system. We seek an innovative, collaborative, flexible, and service-oriented librarian to provide professional and technical support to teens and adult patrons. The ideal candidate has strengths in programs and services, contemporary and classic teen literature, and current and emerging technologies.

Supervision

Works under the general supervision of the Head of Reference & Adult Services and in collaboration with the other Reference/Teen Librarian.

Job Environment

Work is performed under typical office and library conditions. Occasionally required to work outside of normal business hours. In addition, may be required to work on weekends and evenings when staffing levels and staffing situations dictate.

Operates computer and other standard office equipment.

Daily contact with library patrons, other town departments, and other library organizations by phone, in person, and in writing.

Essential Functions

Reference/Adult Services:

Provides general library reference services, reader’s/listener’s/viewer’s advisory service, and technological instruction to a diverse public, primarily adults and teenagers. Assists patrons with the library's public computers and printing. Markets the library to patrons and the community through outreach and publicity.

Teen Services:

With the direction from and involvement of the Head of Reference & Adult Services and in collaboration with the other Reference/Teen Librarian, develops a full range of teen programming including but not limited to book clubs, special events, music and arts programs. Responsible for teen programming from conception through planning, publicity, and follow up. Assists with selected adult programs as needed, at the direction of the Head of Reference & Adult Services.

Establishes effective working relationships with teachers, school administrators, and school librarians in order to enrich teen collection and associated programs and services. May attend meetings and events at locations outside the library.

Recommends materials for the development of the teen collections. Actively participates in collection development and weeding.

Updates library website and social networking sites as needed to promote programs and services.

Explores new technologies for communicating with and engaging teens.

Performs work in collaboration with the other Reference/Teen Librarian as appropriate or directed.

Participates in professional development to gain additional knowledge and skills, and shares new knowledge and skills with colleagues as appropriate. Active participation expected on library network committees and/or statewide committees as needed.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

A master’s degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited school is preferred.

Applicants with a degree in progress and some relevant work experience may be considered.

Public library experience preferred.

Knowledge, Ability, and Skill

Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of library principles, practices, and current trends and resources in information services. Thorough knowledge of teen literature. Knowledge of and comfort with emerging library/information technology skills and trends. Working knowledge of

Microsoft Office and Google Suite; graphic design software like Canva; social media; website maintenance; basic technology support and troubleshooting; or other relevant technologies.

Ability and Skill: A strong public service commitment with excellent customer service and communication skills. Ability to provide consistent, high-quality and patron-centered service.

Excellent skills in interpersonal relations, and written, oral, and online communication. Excellent organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work creatively, effectively, independently, and cooperatively with colleagues, patrons, and the community at large, especially teens. Ability to foster open communication and cooperative relationships. Ability to troubleshoot public computers and printers. Should be comfortable with public speaking and have presentation experience.

Physical Requirements

Light physical effort required in carrying and shelving books, and in performing other typical library functions. Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and climbing. Ability to operate a keyboard at an efficient speed. Frequently required to sit and talk or hear, use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with arms and hands. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move materials weighing up to 20 pounds.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $44,515.28 - $53,018.42 per year
