Recreation Specialist- Environmental Education (Part-Time)

The purpose of this position is to assist recreation program delivery. This is accomplished by monitoring facility operations, recommending and implementing age appropriate recreation programs and actives, performing administrative duties, and supervising and training contracted activities staff. Other duties include pick up trash in and around facility, assisting with department special events, assisting in ordering supplies, delivering summer camp program, and coordinating with outside agencies.
- Opening and closing facilities during facility rentals and regular business hours
- Assist with the daily operation of the nature and event center.
- Perform administrative duties via phone and email, answering questions, signing up visitors for programs using RecTrac.
- Assist with training and supervising of volunteers.
- Assisting with maintenance of grounds, trails, and facility.
- Assist with maintaining program props, interpretive displays, native plant gardens, and demonstration bird feeder areas.
- Instruct and develop environmental education programming, curriculum, and materials for visitors of all ages including camps and outreach programs.
- Assist with development of educational exhibits with seasonally and geographically relevant themes. Collect and process new biological artifacts (pressing leaves, preserving mushrooms, etc.), write exhibit copy, layout, and format exhibit copy. Design graphics for the exhibit
- Assist with designing and conducting animal ambassador programming and demonstrating correct handling techniques and protocols.
- Maintaining the animal ambassador collection by providing animal husbandry.
- Operate city vehicles including a 14-passenger bus.
- Assists with the preparation and management of facility use for private, non-profit, and business events/meetings.
- Provide basic first aid and CPR if necessary.
- Preparing bank deposits.
- Assist with natural resource management projects at the nature preserve.
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma/GED or equivalent and six months of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Other Requirements:
- Class C Driver’s License
- CPR/First Aid and AED certification, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
- Ability to work nights, weekends, and some holidays.
Note: A driving and criminal history check is required for the selected candidate. The selected candidate will also be required to complete a post-offer drug screen.
Working Conditions: This position generally requires work indoors in a recreation or neighborhood center, as well as outdoors for special programs and events.

Health Benefits are offered to employees working at least 30 hours per week.
Health Insurance - The City offers two options for health coverage: a standard PPO plan and a High Deductible Health Plan with an associated Health Savings Account. Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following 30 days of employment for employees and their eligible dependents. Both you and the City contribute to the overall cost of coverage.
Dental Insurance - Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following 30 days of employment. Employees, their spouse and dependent children are eligible for coverage.
Life Insurance - The city pays to provide coverage valued at one times your annual salary. Supplemental insurance is available for employees to purchase. Optional coverage for dependents is also available for purchase.
Retirement:
- NC Local Government Retirement System - All benefits eligible employees make a mandatory 6% contribution every pay period.
- Deferred Compensation – The city contributes an amount equal to 4.5% of the annual salary to either the 401(k) or 457 plans regardless of employee contribution. Employees may choose to contribute additional money to the deferred compensation plans, without a match from the City, within the IRS guidelines.
- Sick Leave - 12 days accrued each year
- Holidays - 12 paid holidays annually
- Paid Parental Leave - Six weeks of paid leave for the birth, adoption or placement of a child (must run concurrently with FMLA).
- Part-Time Employees will earn paid leave benefits on a pro-rated basis.
