OVERVIEW OF ROLE:

BPR’s Community Programs Team provides recreation and leisure programming to Boulder’s youth (camps), people with disabilities (EXPAND) and youth, teens & families living with low income (Youth Services Initiative). We are looking for passionate, dedicated, and creative people to work directly with individuals, plan & run activities, lead groups, and make a difference in our participants’ lives. We are a team focused on working hard while having fun!

This job is part time with varying hours each season based on the programs offered. Roles include being camp counselor at summer or school day off camps and being a program staff at weekly activities and special events with people with disabilities and/or people living in low-income housing sites. This position allows for growth from an assistant into a lead staff helping to build your leadership skills and prepare you for jobs in the future. We hope you will come join our team!

The starting pay for this position is $16.65 - $20.35 hourly, commensurate with experience.

ESSENTIAL
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implement Recreation and Leisure Programming for specified populations
  • Organize & Lead group activities for 5-15 individuals ( ie create groups, set up activity, give instructions, actively supervise participa nts throughout activity)
  • Provide adjustments to general program plans so they are successful for specified populations ( ie provide accommodations and rule modification as needed)
  • Supervision of Participants and Camp & Program Staff I’s
  • Supervise and interact with participants with a variety of different needs and abilities
  • Actively engage with participants in activities
  • Provide 1:1 support to youth, teens and adults with disabilities as needed
  • Supervise the proper use of equipment by campers
  • Provide guidance and instruction to other staff ensuring they understand their role in activities and are actively participating.
  • Communicate with Camp Director and Program Staff Lead about questions or concerns with campers or staff.
  • Ensure safe environment for participants
  • Follow all current health and licensing rules and recommendations
  • Follow general safety rules and recommendations for Community Programs Team and Boulder Parks & Recreation
  • Behavior Management
  • Utilize behavior management/ support techniques to adequately ensure participants’ safety
  • Utilize group management skills to keep participants safe and engaged
  • Model group and behavior management techniques for Camp and Program Staff I’s
  • Positive and proactive communication with parents, care givers, head staff and program coordinators about participant behavior concerns

REQUIRED CANDIDATE COMPETENCIES:
  • Ability to work Independently: Ability to work with individuals and implement programming without full-time direct supervision from coordinator
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to create appropriate and meaningful relationships with participants and parents. Ability to update parents appropriately and compassionately on participants progress and express concerns when needed.
  • Calm Under Pressure: Ability to remain calm in high pressure situations such as seizures, allergies, or behavioral incidents.
  • Enthusiasm: Ability to create a fun and engaging environment for participants.
  • Initiative:?Identifying what needs to be done and doing it before being asked or before the situation requires it. Completes work in a timely and consistent manner.
  • Leadership: Ability to lead activities and groups. Ability to direct and mentor assistants and volunteers to be successful in programs.

Minimum requirements
:
  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Minimum 480 hours of verifiable experience directly supervising school age children in a group setting OR a college degree in early childhood education, recreation or a related field
  • Experience working with youth, teens, people with disabilities and/or underrepresented communities in group or 1:1 settings
  • Experience leading recreation or leisure programming with youth, teens and/or adults.
  • Ability to confidently provide excellent customer service to participants and guardians in programs
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Physical ability to participate in activities, run, climb, swim, lift or support the weight of children
  • Ability to evaluate conditions in assigned area and make decisions related to safety
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution
  • Willingness and ability to work as part of a team
  • Willingness to provide support to people with disabilities
  • Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history.
  • Ability and willingness to attend and complete trainings as required, including State of Colorado Child Care requirements.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
  • First Aid, CPR and AED Certified
  • Experience supervising/leading staff and/or volunteers
  • Experience working with and/or supporting people with disabilities
  • Ability and willingness to drive participants and staff in vehicles provided by Boulder Parks and Recreation
  • Knowledge of injury prevention and treatment
  • 1000 hours of verifiable experience directly supervising school age children in a group setting
  • Knowledge of principles and experience or certification in instructing sport, recreation or leisure activities.
  • Bi-lingual in English/Spanish
  • Lifeguard Certified
