Job Title: Recreation Operations Manager- Programming
Hiring Range: $41.77 - $46.96

Position Summary: Provide a wide variety of administrative, supervisory, and technical work in the management, planning, coordination and operation of the Youth and Adult Athletics Programs, State Licensed Camp Programs, Guest Service Operations for all facilities, Outdoor Recreation Programming and Fitness Programs within the City of Aspen Recreation Department.
Supervision Exercised and Received: Position works under the general supervision and direction of the Recreation Manager. Oversees Recreation supervisors and specialists.
Essential Job Functions:
Recreation Programming
- Responsible for the development, implementation, and supervision of the fitness, day camp, athletic, outdoor recreation, guest services programs and field reservations for outside user groups.
- Depending on program, duties may include: planning, organizing, marketing, administering, managing, and evaluating recreation programs to meet community needs and interests.
- Duties include scheduling of all user group field reservation for all athletic fields of outside stakeholders and organizations, over sees the Red Brick Recreation facility, Gymnastics Contract, Tennis Contract.
- Responsible for developing and implementing new recreation programming in accordance with Recreation plans and industry trends.
- Supervises daily operations of the associated Recreation department, including: wellness, fitness program, day camp, outdoor recreation, guest services and other staff.
- Acts as the Manager on Duty (MOD) of the Red Brick or Aspen Recreation Center, as assigned. MOD duties include responding to customer service, personnel, facilities, and operational issues. Ensures all safety measures and regulations are followed.
- Responsible for staffing and safety during facility events and rentals. Work requires the exercise of considerable initiative and independent judgment.
Supervision
- Responsible for selecting, training, supervising and evaluating full-time and part-time recreational staff, temporary agency workers, and volunteers
- Responsible for hiring, training, scheduling, of Certified Fitness Instructors, Day Camp Instructors, Youth Program Instructors. Ensures expanded background check completed pre-hire for state licensure. Delegates tasks to personnel during shift as appropriate, insures adequate staffing, and completion of tasks during shift as appropriate. Communicates policies, procedures and job expectations. Provides training and resolves problems as necessary.
- Executes leadership and supervision responsibilities through sound judgment, focusing on quality improvement, managing and resolving conflict, fostering a culture of accountability, clearly defining responsibilities and expectations, setting goals, providing motivation and performance feedback, recognizing contributions and encouraging training and development.
Community Partnerships
- Develops and maintains community partnerships and intergovernmental relationships with the goal of increasing recreational opportunities throughout the community. Ensures a close working relationship with the Aspen School District.
Customer Service
- Provides positive customer service and information to the public regarding the recreation facilities, program content and registration process.
- Responds to concerns and complaints in a timely, courteous, and helpful manner.
- Effective liaison with local entities and organizations related to the ARC and Red Brick. Works closely with user groups in scheduling facility usage.
Budget
- Responsible for budget preparation for designated programs. Assists the Recreation Director with the Recreation budget. Monitors program actual expenditures and revenues. Makes recommendations as to pricing of programs and capital needs and expenditures. Responsible for fee ordinance preparation for all fitness, athletic programs, day camp, outdoor recreation programs, memberships and daily admissions. Produce program workbooks for all current and new programs prior to each program start. Responsible for invoicing and collecting revenue for all field reservations.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Parks and Recreation, Commercial Recreation, Physical Education or related field.
Experience: Three years of progressively responsible experience in recreation programming and management to include two years of supervisory experience.
Technical Knowledge: Must be proficient in the following areas: Microsoft Outlook Email, and a basic understanding of computers and online computer-based technology applications, which includes accessing web based platforms.
Licenses & Certifications:
Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of start date.
NOTE: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above.
Preferred Candidate: Has certification from the National Recreation and Parks Association.
NOTE: This position requires a physical examination and Criminal Background Check upon hire. Employment is contingent upon passing a physical examination and Criminal Background Check.
Position Type and Work Hours: **
- Regular full time, hours may vary with workload. Flexible schedule may be implemented based on staffing needs.
- Evenings/Weekends may be required in addition to or instead of normal hours to cover programs and/or schedules.
- Special Events: Will be required to work to supervise operations during swim meets, Project Graduation, and other community or private events.
Work Environment:
- Indoors: Office environment. Also works in aquatic environment and recreational environment.
- Outdoors/Off-Site: Some outdoor work may be required that involves varied weather conditions.
- Meetings, trainings, and site visits at a variety of city facilities and areas.
