JOB SUMMARY: The Regional Center for Independent Living (RCIL)Deaf Service Specialist under general supervision, will provide referrals, information, as well as core service supports for housing, skills training, peer supports, and advocacy to individuals who are hearing impaired.
DEAF SERVICES SPECIALIST DUTIES:
- Responds to Intake and Referral (I&R) calls, assist with housing, benefits, skills training and advocacy and referrals for consumers who are deaf and hard of hearing.
- Completes required paperwork, including case notes, in a timely manner.
- Refers individuals to appropriate community-based services.
- Provide outreach to people with disabilities in the community.
- Ability to present and/or teach classes to consumers and/or professionals.
- Using the Independent Living Philosophy and the Regional Center for Independent Living’s (RCIL) mission statement, assists institutionalized individuals in creating goal plans for independent living.
- Review’s goal plan with the individual and updates as needed.
- Advocates on behalf of the consumer as well as assists institutionalized individuals in applying for and / or securing the transition process into community-based services.
- Participates in agency sponsored events, including events at Center for Disability Right’s (CDR) Action Center and Advocacy Actions.
- Videophone calls with consumers, services providers, and agencies.
- Emails with consumers, services providers, and agencies.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree or Associates Degree in Human Services or related fields. One (1) year knowledge of community-based services and public benefits.
- Fluent in ASL and deaf communication equipment.
- Must have reliable mode of transportation.
- Must have a strong commitment to promote and advocate for the full integration of individuals with disabilities.
- Must have creativity and comfort in dealing with a wide range of diverse individuals and situations.
**Candidate must be fluent in ASL to be considered for this position. **
