Summary:
Under the direction of the Director of R&D, the Research & Development Food scientist develops new formulations that meet customer expectations. Supports the development process from working with the customer to determine requirements, is proficient at formula development through the R&D process to full commercialization. Provides ongoing technical support to the organization and customers as needed.
Job Duties:
The list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary from time to time.

  • Work directly with sales, marketing, and customers to determine customer requests
  • Develop formulations using formula development software
  • Add ingredients and nutritional information into software package for new ingredients as required.
  • Prepare Product specifications including analytical, microbiological, ingredient lines and nutrition panels
  • Prepare Production Batch records for new items.
  • Support production in initial product production runs to successful commercialization. (Requires time on off shifts)
  • Assist in overseeing research and development technician work
  • Conduct post production product analysis and update specifications and batch records as needed.
  • Provide technical support to production and supply chain as needed,
  • Cook test formulations and prepare products to be sent to customers
  • Maintain inventories of laboratory ingredients and packaging supplies
  • Evaluate test products for moisture, salt, pH, viscosity and other analytical specifications
  • Maintain R&D lab and associated areas in a sanitary manner.
  • Package samples for shipment to customers
  • Bench top preparation/testing of products under simulated use
  • Maintain shelf life samples and evaluate as needed to determine shelf life of product
  • Conduct internal sensory testing of R&D samples as needed
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science or equivalent in Food Science, Chemistry or associated discipline. Two years or more of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, batch record information, formulation information, etc.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to communicate effectively with vendors and employees of the organization
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers and decimals
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds
