SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of the Director of Communications, and according to established Firm policies and procedures, the Public Relations Manager is responsible for overseeing the successful execution of the law firm’s public relations program. The Public Relations Manager works directly with marketing and client growth personnel, external public relations consultants and other key firm leaders and stakeholders to increase the visibility of the firm, key practices and individuals through media coverage and other strategic communications and thought leadership projects.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1) Work with firm leaders, attorneys, marketing personnel and external PR agencies and resources to help shape and implement the firm’s public relations plan including goals, tactics and budget.
a) Create media strategies that reflect the firm’s brand and positioning, disseminate key messages and achieve the media coverage goals of the firm.
b) Act as main point of contact and provide direction to external PR agencies and resources.
c) Prioritize projects and deliverables while ensuring consistent high-quality work product.
d) Establish and maintain project plans, including timelines of deliverables, to ensure the team meets the project goals.
2) Work with marketing/client growth teams, firm stakeholders and attorneys to develop story ideas as well as identify trends, issues and other newsworthy items on an ongoing basis.
a) Monitor news outlets for topics relevant to the firm’s legal practices and identify opportunities for commentary by subject matter experts.
b) Prepare attorneys for media interviews, including the development of messaging, background information, and sitting in on interviews.
c) Work with appropriate stakeholders to vet and approve media opportunities, in accordance with firm guidelines and policies.
d) Leverage existing media relationships and develop new contacts within key business, trade and legal press. Research media markets in different geographies and industries as necessary.
3) Draft and distribute press releases, article pitches, bylined article abstracts, and more. Provide editorial guidance and help place and position articles. Conduct appropriate follow-up to ensure publication. Update firm press kit material.
4) Contribute to crisis communications strategy and execution as needed.
5) Manage effective media tracking and prepare reporting and analysis for firm leadership and other firm stakeholders. Gather and distribute internal media coverage highlights and work with marketing team to maximize promotion externally.
6) Provide advice and counsel on new communications tools, research and competitive intelligence information when needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
1. Five to eight years of professional services, corporate, government or nonprofit public relations, communications or marketing experience. Law firm public relations experience or public relations agency environment preferred.
2. Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to proofread materials for grammatical, typographical and spelling errors; ability to communicate in complicated and changing circumstances, as well as having the aptitude or motivation to communicate in an appropriate manner. Experience with Associated Press style (drafting and editing).
3. Ability to function in a fast-paced environment, organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints and tight deadlines while maintaining a high standard of work quality.
4. Possess a strong sense of urgency and enthusiasm, paired with organizational skills and attention to detail.
5. Possess interpersonal and communication skills in order to communicate with a diverse group of attorneys, business professionals and clients and provide information with appropriate courtesy and tact while safeguarding confidentiality and representing the firm in a favorable and business-like manner.
6. Builds trust and credibility as a communications partner, providing sound advice for effective public relations and communications.
7. Self-motivated, highly flexible, intellectually curious, a fast learner. Works well with or without direct supervision on projects.
8. Proficiency in Windows 10; Word, PowerPoint and spreadsheet applications, preferably Excel. Keen understanding of desktop publishing and design programs, email marketing software, content management systems, etc.
