The Prototype & Test Technician – Vehicle Integration (VI), supports the rapid development and prototype build of ElectraMeccanica vehicles, subsystems components.
This person is the is responsible for full support of all prototype vehicle builds, modifications and component updates. Inclusive of entire vehicle mechanical and electrical updates.
Additionally, this person is will be responsible to complete full vehicle test instrumentation and diagnostics.
This role requires strong communication, negotiation and leadership skills. They must be knowledgeable of automotive mechanical, electrical and vehicle diagnostics systems as well as proactive, self-starting, energetic and an ability to work effectively within cross functional teams.
In addition, this role will also support advanced engineering activities and Technology Road Map development executed by the Head of Advanced Engineering.
The Protype & Test Technician – Vehicle Integration, will support EMV engineering and business teams based in Mesa Arizona.
Job Responsibilities
- Instrument and build test vehicles to specifications given by the customer. This includes removing and replacing parts as needed.
- Build and repair prototype vehicles, systems, and subsystems
- Inclusive of disassembly and reassembly of test parts for performance and wear evaluations (i.e., measurement of rotors, hubs tire treads, etc.)
- Installation of various instrumentation, such as flow meters, pressure transducers, thermocouples, humidity Sensors, Accelerometers, strain gauges, LVDTs/String pots, as well as Low voltage, High Voltage and Current Sensors to monitor energy consumption and any other device monitoring equipment as required.
- Diagnostics of vehicle instrumentation to ensure proper functionality.
- Run vehicle level tests: setup, detailed inspections, maintenance and component retrofits.
- Keep up to date with data processing skills, which includes assisting Engineer when needed.
- Update prototype vehicles though fabrication, modification or replacement of vehicle components.
- Complete repair and diagnosis of concept and prototype vehicles.
- Fabrication of wiring harnesses for 12V and High Voltage systems.
- Maintain inventory of prototype shop supplies and tools.
- Support design engineering with potential assembly and service issues
- Provide failure analysis feedback and design concerns to Engineering.
- Diagnose, maintain and repair EMV vehicles
- Perform other duties as assigned or requested
Working Conditions
- Prototype center, manufacturing facility, shop floor.
Requirements
- 5+ years automotive mechanical experience with knowledge of products and repair procedures, preferred.
- 3+ years of vehicle test instrumentation with knowledge and experience with Data Acquisition Systems.
- Specific experience with HEV, PHEV and EV is required.
- At a minimum, must have High Voltage Level 2 safety training certification (Qualified Electrician for HV Systems in Motor Vehicles). Level 3 HV safety certification is preferred.
- Instrumentation experience of refrigerant components, sensors, valves, and fluid transport components is beneficial.
- EPA Section 609 certified (HVAC refrigerant) or equivalent.
- Thorough understanding of overall brake and testing procedures while paying close attention to detail.
- Prefer experience using diagnostic software tools (CAN Data Loggers or similar).
- Must possess a thorough knowledge of complex mechanical and/or electrical concepts.
- Ability to read and comprehend complex engineering drawings.
- Good verbal and written communication and organizational skills are a priority.
- Must possess interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with others.
- Good knowledge of vehicle from Bumper to Bumper and its functions.
- Creativity; strong communication (verbal, written, presentation)
- Open minded and flexible enough to work effectively in an environment where project priorities may rapidly shift
- MS Office, SharePoint, PowerPoint, experience.
