Protected Rights/Title IX Investigator
Job description
Reporting to the Executive Counsel to the President for Legal Affairs, Protected Rights and Title IX Compliance, the Protected Rights / Title IX Investigator is responsible for timely conducting, managing, and documenting various investigations, including but not limited to, investigations of complaints of harassment (including sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, and power-based violence), discrimination, retaliation, and violations of ULM policies and procedures. The incumbent will play an important role in the University's education, prevention, and response efforts related to gender, sex, race, color, national origin, age, religion, disability, veteran status, and other legally protected categories.
- Conducts and manages prompt, impartial, and thorough investigations involving students, faculty, staff, affiliates, and non-affiliates related to policy violations, retaliation, harassment and discrimination allegations under Title VI, Title VII, Title IX, power-based violence, the Americans with Disabilities Act and other applicable laws and compliance regulations
- Investigates concerns in a timely, thorough and accurate manner.
- Investigates concerns, explains policies and procedures, suggests supportive measures as appropriate, gathers relevant information, and presents formal report that demonstrates balanced reasoning; clear articulation of facts and supporting evidence
- Develops an investigative plan for complaints in accordance with university policy and recognized standards
- Maintains appropriate case management reporting and tracking
- Manages initial and ongoing communication and official notices to parties involved in an investigation as well as administrators involved in the process
- Explains investigations, as needed, in adjudication hearings, to others involved in the adjudication processes as well as relevant stakeholders
- Stays abreast of changes to related laws, rules, policies, procedures and regulations.
- Facilitates related training to individuals, faculty, staff, students, and the community
- Provides progress reports of active cases
- Perform other duties as assigned
This position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university as recognized by the US Department of Education and 3-5 years of related experience. Experience includes work in investigations, EEO, employee relations, human resources, higher education administration. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
Ideal candidate will have knowledge of civil rights laws and investigations, in particular Title VI, Title VII, Title IX, and the Americans with Disabilities Act, Clery Act and Violence Against Women Act. Experience working in an educational setting, especially in higher education institutions preferred. Related training or certification through a nationally recognized institution desired. Experience working with individuals experiencing a crisis preferred. Familiarity with case management system(s) desired. Strong oral and written communications strongly preferred.
