Property Maintenance/Minimum Housing Inspector

This position is full-time, nonexempt, classified and covered as defined by The Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.
Hours are 7:30 - 4:30 pm; 40 hours/week; overtime as required
Under the direction of the Assistant Building Commissioner, the Property Maintenance/Minimum Housing Inspector is responsible for facilitating the property maintenance program of Allen County by inspecting private property for violations of county ordinances, generating legal documents, testifying in hearings, and coordinating abatement with private contractors and other agencies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responsible for performing on-site inspections by driving to properties and documenting violations by camera and report.
- Prepares violation citations and mails them per ordinance and state law.
- Schedules re-inspections and court hearings.
- Discusses special cases with legal counsel and/or management.
- Communicates verbally and in writing with citizens, other enforcement agencies, and political leaders.
- Responsible for assisting with creating and maintaining standard operating procedures (SOPs) and meeting with peers.
- Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.
REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Diploma or GED and eight years of experience in construction, code enforcement, or related experience
- Valid Allen County Contractor License required
- Valid Driver’s License to perform field inspections using a county vehicle
- Ability to understand and communicate codes to contractors and owners
- Strong technical writing skills to create legal documents
- Strong verbal communications skills to do public speaking
- Basic math and measuring skills using tape measures and levels
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and maps
- Thorough knowledge of housing codes and related construction materials, practices, and procedures
- Basic computer and typing skills including the ability to use Microsoft Office and other job related software
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The Property Maintenance/Minimum Housing Inspector performs field inspections with exposure to various weather conditions and physical hazards normally associated with the inspection of structures. Some lifting, reaching over head, and kneeling with frequent bending, climbing ladders, walking on uneven surfaces, and exposure to noise and dangerous equipment are to be expected.
