The Equity Center at the University of Virginia within the Karsh Institute of Democracy seeks a motivated Program Manager for its Starr Hill Pathways youth pipeline initiative.
The Democracy Initiative Center for the Redress of Inequity Through Community-Engaged Scholarship (the “Equity Center”) is the University of Virginia’s newest collaborative multi-disciplinary center, established in August 2019. The Equity Center tangibly redresses racial and socioeconomic inequality in university communities by advancing a transformative approach to universities’ fundamental research mission, which will in turn reform institutional values, pedagogy and operations. Specifically, the Equity Center will change the way that University of Virginia (UVA) scholars interact with members of the surrounding community, replacing a model that has been extractive with one that is respectful and collaborative and conducts research that benefits communities. This approach will be a model for institutions of higher education domestically and globally to leverage their anchor positions in local communities to eradicate racial and socioeconomic inequity.
The Starr Hill Pathways Program Manager will join a team of passionate educators and will require exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and the highest standards of integrity. The ideal candidate will coordinate closely with the school systems, local youth serving organizations, and University staff and faculty ensuring community needs take priority in nurturing this new partnership. In collaboration with the Equity Center staff, they will help guide communication and outreach efforts, co- creation and implementation of programming, and coordinating partnerships . The intent of the position is to help knit existing community and university resources to provide robust college and career pathways support for local youth from marginalized communities.
Job responsibilities:
Assists the Starr Hill Director in administering the Center’s youth and education working partnerships through sustainable collaborative relationships that enhance academic and community engagement
Develop systems and processes necessary for the recruitment, tracking, planning, and execution of projects related to pipeline programming.
Develop systems to help coordinate mentoring and tutoring for SHP participants.
Work collaboratively with Equity Center staff and faculty to develop meaningful partnerships across the community and university in order to effectively and holistically support students and families.
Cultivate relationships with business, academic, science, and educational groups that fit the college and career pipelines model.
Assist completion of deliverables and adherence to timelines, track milestones and timelines across projects.
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned by the Starr Hill Director
Required Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree
Experience: Two years of experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Must have a commitment to serve communities by reducing racial and socioeconomic inequity.
Experience in budget management skills, and demonstrably sound professional judgment.
Ability to develop, articulate and implement organizational vision.
Excellent organizational skills, time management, and transparent, high integrity leadership skills.
Ability to make sound decisions based on competing and complex information from multiple sources.
Ability to work with tact on complex, sensitive and confidential issues.
The analytical skills and judgment to interpret data and take the appropriate action in circumstances /situations.
Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications:
Education: Master's or terminal degree
Preference will be given to candidates’ knowledge and experience with Charlottesville and Albemarle County organizations working to redress racial and socio-economic inequalities in education and youth.
Background working in communications both print and digital.
Physical Demands:
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

The anticipated start date is July 2023.
This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. Anticipated Hiring Range: $60,000-$70,000 commensurate with education and experience.
