Job description
The Deputy Director, Galveston National Laboratory (GNL) supports the Galveston National Lab Director in managing the high containment and maximum containment laboratories. The Deputy Director, Galveston National Laboratory will establish and assist in achieving a strategic plan for high impact research and continued financial support of lab operations. This position will assist and closely work in coordination with the GNL Director and Scientific Director in setting the research priorities for the facility and implementing the organization’s scientific vision, including expansion of the research footprint to include international field collaborations. This position will also serve as a liaison with all university departments and schools and will represent the GNL and UTMB with external entities as appropriate.
Academically, the successful candidates should be highly productive based on their past accomplishments and have either an established record of extramural funding or have the potential to establish robust, funded research programs in the desired research areas. The successful applicants should be amenable to collaborative studies with other investigators studying infectious diseases, as well as teaching and mentoring graduate and medical students.
Essential Job Functions:
- Develop and manage research projects that align with the strategic vision of the organization and seek/apply for funding to support them
- Assist in communicating the strategic vision to stakeholder audiences through educational seminars, community presentations and meetings
- Maintain an active, externally funded research portfolio that aligns with the mission of the GNL
- Lead collaboration development and collaboration efforts for international field studies in support of the organization mission
- Interpret, guide and follow all regulatory requirements including of the Center for Disease Control, USDA and the Food and Drug Administration
- Support and mentor junior faculty who are building their research footprints
- Establish and maintain affiliation with an academic department as faculty and participate in educational duties as specified
- Build relationships with leadership from university departments, Centers and Institutes to identify potential collaborations or areas for research partnerships
- Participate//Lead the business development process for reviewing and contracting with external entities, including other universities, federal or state funding agencies and public or private companies
- Coordinate with research departments at UT System institutions to leverage expertise and build partnerships
- Represent the GNL as needed with community organizations, elected officials, donors, students and others
Marginal or Periodic Functions:
- Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
- Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- PhD or MD degree with an expertise in infectious disease research or treatment
- Five years of BSL4 research experience
- Eligibility to become select agent certified.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Select Agent Certified
- Expertise in Microbiology & Immunology, Pathology, Virology or Vaccinology
Salary:
Commensurate with experience.

- Assist the individual in successfully performing the role
- Ability to work independently as well as to motivate and lead teams.
- Exceptional written and verbal communications skills.
- Understanding of regulatory procedures governing BSL4 lab operations.
- Knowledge of vaccine and drug development processes.
- Experience seeking and receiving federal research grant support.
- Understanding of emerging diseases, pandemic preparedness, US Biodefense strategies, risks, and opportunities.
- Strong organization skills and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Teaching experience (post-graduate, medical school level).
- Problem solving and decision-making ability.
- Demonstrated commitment to quality and high standards.
