Department: 2740|Physics
Responsibilities:
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher who will focus on Machine Learning for adaptive surveys and mapping of the seabed using Autonomous Underwater Vehicles. The project is supported by the Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute which is a partnership among NOAA Office of Exploration and Research, The University of New Hampshire, The University of Rhode Island, The University of Southern Mississippi, The Ocean Exploration Trust and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. In particular, for this project, the candidate will work directly with scientists from the University of Southern Mississippi and from the Woods Hole Research Institute embracing several disciplines including: oceanography, hydrography, robotics, electrical/mechanical engineering, signal processing, data analysis, hence the candidate will have the unique opportunity to shape his/her educational path and to be exposed to the most advance techniques/methods in autonomous systems.
Job Duties Include:
- Develop algorithms to process seafloor maps to identify location and condition of deep coral communities
- Develop and run low-energy consumption machine learning software on parallel machine and GPUs to process multibeam data
- Collaborate with other scientists, engineers, and technicians responsible for the AUV software integration
- Testing at sea the developed approach
- Present findings at scientific conferences and write technical reports and scientific publications to disseminate the results of the research
- Maintain up-to-date records and documentation of all research activities, including software code, data files, and metadata.
