Overview:
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery-Medical Engineering at Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine invites applications for a Postdoctoral-Medical Engineering Associate. Seeking a highly qualified and creative scientist with expertise in orthopaedic tissue engineering. The Postdoctoral Associate will be actively involved in advancing the ongoing projects as well as developing new hypothesis-based projects and will have the opportunity to work with researchers and clinicians. The candidate should be an independent thinker with the ability to troubleshoot challenging problems with innovative ideas.

Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for establishing workflows, design, and execute experiments with high level of independence, organization, and scientific rigor.
  • Responsible for establishing SOPs and adapt new protocols from literature.
  • Perform data analysis and develop strategies for troubleshooting and/or optimization.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant literature.
  • Mentor junior colleagues.
  • Present data and write original manuscripts.
  • Develop innovative hypothesis driven projects and write grants.
  • Availability to work on weekends and evenings to complete time sensitive projects.
  • Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • PhD degree in Biological/Biomedical/Bioengineering/Chemical Engineering, Biomaterials, Regenerative Medicine or related disciplines.
  • Strong publication track record.
  • Experience in the fabrication of polymeric scaffolds, 3D printing, and microdevices.
  • Design and perform cell-based assays like ELISA, RT-PCR, western blot, and cell cytotoxicity assays.
  • Experience in the design and assembly of synthetic DNA constructs (pDNA), next-generation sequencing, and basic bioinformatic analyses.
  • Assist and perform in vivo experiments, including implant surgeries on rodents, and other routine procedures, such as health monitoring, explant collection, and drug administration.
  • Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in organization of workflow.
