Essential Functions
A UNO/UNMC Department of Public Safety Patrol Sergeant provides management and leadership consistent with the mission of the University, understanding the uniqueness of public safety and law enforcement in collegiate and hospital environments, and is sensitive to the safety needs of students, faculty, staff and guests. The Patrol Sergeant, reporting to the Captain of Patrol Operations, has direction and supervision of a team of police officers to accomplish daily and long-term law enforcement responsibilities. Sergeants mentor, motivate, and provide guidance to assist in the professional development of police officers and those security officers assigned to their team.

Additional Duties
Plans, prioritizes, assigns, and reviews the work of subordinates; approves reports and citations for accuracy and completeness; oversees case management and investigation of reported incidents; manages patrol work schedules to ensure adequate staffing; implements patrol and community policing strategies to provide campus safety and engagement with the campus community; responds to incidents that range from simple calls for assistance to major safety/criminal incidents; assists in coordinating support from outside agencies; implements special projects to enhance relationships with the campus community and address crime trends; provides guidance to officers in the application/compliance of laws, university policy, and department policy; conducts personnel and equipment inspections; participates in the hiring of assigned personnel; trains and evaluates assigned personnel; assists with training and orientation of new employees; mentors assigned personnel; completes employee performance evaluations and other reviews as needed; promotes career development of subordinates, all according to established policies and procedures of the University.

Participate in shift activities as necessary including responding to crimes, accident scenes, and emergencies as needed; enforcing local and state laws; issuing citations; and making arrests. Patrolling by foot, bicycle, or vehicle to engage with the campus community, prevent crime, and enforce traffic and criminal law. Complete performance evaluations for assigned officers and investigate complaints received by the department as necessary. Support and effect department goals of diversity and inclusive excellence. Evaluate training programs for effectiveness and application, provide supervision and direction during assigned special events, and oversee special projects and programs and training as assigned. Review and assist with development of department policies and procedures where applicable. Assume responsibility of all aspects of campus safety and security in the absence of a higher-ranking officer.

Coordinates police activities with other units in the department, campus, and/or other community partners for planned events, during incidents, and activities that enhance collaboration; coordinate functions of the unit with other law enforcement agencies. Perform related duties as required.

Required Qualifications
High School diploma is required. Minimum of five (5) years of experience in law enforcement. Must have Police Certification in good standing in the State of Nebraska, or if certification is from outside Nebraska, the incumbent is required to obtain Nebraska law enforcement certification through the reciprocity process within one (1) year of hire to retain position.

Must have a valid driver’s license and meet University driver eligibility requirements.

Must successfully pass physical, psychological and polygraph exams.

Preferred Qualifications
Law enforcement supervisory experience. Law enforcement experience in college, university, or hospital environment. Ability to speak/understand a second language.

Regularly sits, stands, and walks. Must be able to see, hear, speak, and use both hands. Must be able to climb stairs, bend over, kneel and get up easily without assistance. Physical altercations can and do occur during work hours. This position must maintain a level of physical fitness in order to be safe and maintain control of such situations.
