The Police Marine Equipment Servicer position is the equipment support position for Seattle Police Harbor Patrol Unit. The Unit provides police service, rescue, and fire suppression on Seattle waters 24 hours a day. The Seattle Police Harbor Patrol Unit has boats ranging from 10’ to 48’ and all the related equipment to accomplish these tasks. The Servicer is the key individual solely responsible to keep all the boats and related equipment in good working order. Position responsibilities include preventive maintenance, repair, engine replacement, overhaul, painting, fiberglass, and wood working, welding, updating boats (design and execution), participation in vessel design, metal fabrication, AC and DC electrical systems, general shipwright duties, and general facilities maintenance. The fleet of boats range in size from a 10’ Zodiac to a 48’ multi-engine diesel boat. Related equipment includes: Pumps, generators, fire equipment, hoists, welders, saws, trailers, computers, marine electronics and much more.

Job Responsibilities

  • Maintains and repairs all systems of patrol craft ranging in length from 10 to 48 feet.
  • Performs maintenance and re-fabrication of fiberglass, wood, and aluminum boat structures; welds steel and aluminum hulls.
  • Overhauls, repairs and/or rebuilds gasoline and diesel engines as well as outboard motors ranging in size from 5 to 800 horsepower.
  • Maintains and repairs gasoline and electric portable pumps and generators.
  • Maintains and repairs dock facilities, navigation aids, and piers under the control of the Harbor Unit.
  • Maintains and repairs all shop equipment, including lathe, grinders, and drill press.
  • Maintains an inventory of necessary parts and supplies.
  • Maintains service schedules for all equipment and provides accurate records.
  • Researches and provides suitable replacement of parts, supplies and tools for the overall marine operation.
  • Performs other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Requires five years of experience as a diesel or auto mechanic.

Desired Qualifications:


  • Professional certification in diesel mechanics
  • Professional certification in outboard motor repair
  • Familiarity with AC/DC electrical systems including marine electronics (RADAR, GPS, FLIR, etc.)
  • Five years’ experience working in the marine repair/service field
  • Must be motivated self-starter who can work with little supervision
  • Must be available during holidays and some weekends for emergency repair work
  • Two years of finish carpentry and one year of marine carpentry
Position Requirements:
  • Due to the Seattle Police Department being a 24/7 operation, this position is required to work varied shifts including evenings, weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must pass a Seattle Police Department background investigation.
  • Must have a valid Washington State Driver’s License.
  • Medical examination administered after a conditional offer or employment is made.
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
The job requires working around potentially hazardous equipment, with frequent exposure to toxic chemicals; work is often performed in confined spaces aboard boats. Frequent lifting of heavy objects exceeding 50 pounds in weight is required.

The full salary range for this position is $ 42.57 - $ 44.14 per hour.
