Job Summary:

Work closely with Plastics Department to introduce new molded plastics optics as well as support and improve RPO’s Plastic department. This includes reviewing drawings, quoting new products, working with mold maker on optimal mold designs troubleshooting process, tooling, and equipment issues, perform optical testing, process documentation and work instructions


Summary of Essential Job Duties:


  • Review technical drawings work with customers and or program managers on design for manufacturability
  • Key interface with mold makers, lead tool quoting process, review and approve all tooling designs prior to build.
  • Manage the overall tool build includes interfacing with RPO’s diamond turning department
  • Assist the Plastic Optics department manager with the quoting process for all plastic molded optics
  • Responsible for all new process development efforts and work closely with Quality Engineer on FAI documentation
  • Review and approval of all ECO’s related to plastic molded optics
  • Identify and troubleshoot process, material, tooling, and equipment issues to improve yields, minimize down time
  • Oversee Process Technicians, to include setting up presses, molds and processes
  • Generation of Work Instructions for new products and processes
  • Assist with training of operators/technicians on new products, tooling, equipment, and process revisions
  • Assist in the development of lens metrology set-up
  • Perform root cause analysis with optical, mechanical, and cosmetic issues
  • Continually monitors production runs to ensure quality of parts is maintained
  • Generate and maintain process logbooks
  • Work closely with Diamond Turning on optical insert repairs
  • Lead daily meetings with key plastic department personnel


Requirements and Competencies:

Language Skills:

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret complex documents. Ability to communicate effectively to team members and management and train others.


Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts.


Educational Requirements:

  • B.S. or M.S. degree in Plastics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in injection molding, preferably in optics or other high precision applications
  • Strong understanding of lens optical measurement techniques such as surface profilometry and interferometry
  • Basic understanding of lens cosmetic inspection for optical components
  • Working knowledge of mold tool design and diamond turning
  • Ability to interpret complex drawings and schematics
  • Basic Understanding of Solidworks
  • Working knowledge of computer programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Strong problem-solving skills and efficient management of time and resources
  • Self-Starter capable of working with very little direction

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. May involve prolonged periods of magnified inspection (eye strain)
  • The employee is frequently required to use the computer.


Work Environment:

  • Generally, works in a clean environment and works to maintain the environment as such.
  • Safety Glasses are required
  • May require area specific safety training
  • This position works in a manufacturing environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
  • The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne paper particles.
  • May work at different workstations as production needs require, or shifts from one station to another, during the production process.
