Totally Kids Rehabilitation Hospital has a position available for an In-house Phlebotomist.

Job Summary:

The In-house Phlebotomist reports to the Vice President of Patient Care Services. This position works collaboratively with the clinical team to provide expert collection, management, and transport of multiple types of specimens. The position requires excellent dexterity and phlebotomy skills for the collection of venous specimens for pediatric and young adult patients. The In-house Phlebotomist must have the ability to plan and organize technical work, manage workload, operate technical instruments and equipment, and input data. This position requires the ability to use available resource materials independently to resolve and document challenges, provide staff and management with timely information relevant to the collection, management and transport of specimens. The In-house phlebotomist must be detail oriented, able to reason and solve problems effectively, handle multiple requests and tasks at one time, while maintaining quality care and patient safety. This position requires that the phlebotomist be self-motivated and work well with minimal direction.

Requirements:

• Current State of California Certified Phlebotomy Technician 1.
• American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers certification.
• One year phlebotomy experience in an acute hospital setting or equivalent with at least 6 months experience with pediatric, infants, and neonates.
• Current California Drivers License and minimum state-required auto insurance.
• Ability to report for service needs within 2 hours of being called in.
• Working knowledge of computer and software applications as applicable to job
• Strong communication, verbal, and written English skills.
• Possesses strong organizational and documentation skills.

SPECIFIC FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITY:

• Specimen collection and management

• Performs blood collection by phlebotomy and capillary puncture in a safe, efficient, and professional manner using age-appropriate techniques.
• Pays attention to detail and applies strong problem-solving skills in related to specimen collection and transport, and patient care situations.
• Approaches all patient interaction respectfully and in an age-appropriate manner; with the goal of minimizing pain, harm, or anxiety to pediatric patients.
• Monitors patients for unexpected reactions and responds to emergent situations, as required.
• Works with Medical Lab staff to provide efficient and timely collections.
• Provides other collection services including courier service for specimens collected by other clinicians daily and as needed.
• Understands and educates staff on the appropriate collection medium, techniques, supplies, and handling of all specimens collected at this facility.
• Responsible for ensuring the quality of the blood specimens taken, delivering specimens for processing, and using hospital computer programs to input and retrieve laboratory order information and results as needed.
• Properly identifies all patients prior to blood draws and verifies proper identification and labeling of all specimens prior to transport for processing.
• Follows infection prevention practices and universal precautions, including proper use of PPE and understands current isolation practices.
• Follows best practice for the collection and safe management of specimens, body fluids, and sharps.
• Always maintains patient confidentiality during conversation and when managing documents that include PHI.
• Ensures the comfort and safety of patients during and after every encounter.
• Communication and Collaboration
• Works closely with the clinical team (CNO, laboratory, infection prevention, physician, and bedside staff) to ensure safety and efficiency in the practice of specimen collection and data entry.
• Professionally and respectfully offers correction to staff regarding proper collection techniques and labeling of specimens when needed.
• Maintains specimen collection logs accurately and uses the information to assist in follow up and tracking of specimen results.
• Performs some clerical duties as needed to laboratory functions.
• Participates in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) strategies as appropriate to the position.
• Communicates patient problems to clinical staff promptly including clarification of orders and patient status.
• Identifies problems and communicates concerns to appropriate leadership in a solution-oriented and competent manner.
