JOB DESCRIPTION: The overarching goal of the Peer Navigator position is to assist women who have been formerly incarcerated or involved with the criminal justice system in establishing new skills, patterns of behavior and thinking to enable them to avoid further arrests or violations. Specifically, the peer navigator will be responsible for providing support to residents as they navigate health, mental health, social service and judicial systems as well as providing skill building in the areas of relationships, decision making, problem solving, and positive recreation. The position will require occasional evening and weekend work hours and travel throughout the NYC area.
RESPONSIBILIITES:
- Accompany residents to appointments as needed with mental health provider, medical provider, HRA, court appointments, housing interviews, etc. Support residents in understanding and navigating government and legal agencies, health-related service providers, and other services.
- Assist new residents with addressing immediate needs, which may include, accompanying residents to receive clothing, benefits, health screenings and identification (birth certificates, social security card, etc.)
- Maintain communication with service providers to confirm residents’ attendance to program and other appointments, and to support residents in strengthening relationships with service providers. Completed in collaboration with Social Worker.
- Participate in weekly case conferences with full-time staff regarding identifying resident needs, goals and objectives to maintain success in Providence House program and to achieve independent living.
- Participate in weekly meetings with Social Worker to review appointment calendar and next steps for residents and/or service providers.
- Attend conferences with residents and referral partners, and other service providers, and Providence House Social Worker, as needed.
- Plan the logistics for recreational activities for current residents, including in-house activities, like birthdays, movie night, game night, etc., and outside activities, including ice skating, beach trip, etc. Sometimes will include hosting and facilitating events, if needed.
- Provide monthly workshops for current and former residents to build skills in any of the following areas or other: relationships, problem solving, decision making skills, HRA programs, accessing community resources, housing, as examples. May include coordinating outside service providers or internal staff members to lead workshops.
- Provide quarterly workshops and activities to residents and their families and support team related to strengthening and promoting healthy relationships with romantic partners, family and friends. Completed in collaboration with Social Worker.
- Co-lead and facilitate select workshops and activities, to provide group mentoring opportunities also related to skill building topics (for example, continuing conversations on healthy relationships, accessing community resources, problem solving, etc.).
- Providing logistic support to other events as needed, including Our Journey, a support meeting for women with previous or Interfaces with other staff to assure communication, consistency and teamwork.
- Attends all trainings, meetings and supervision scheduled by supervisor.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Sanctuary Model
- Effectively use and practice Sanctuary Models tools; safety plans, community meetings, psycho-educational groups, team meetings, red flags reviews, and self-care in the program to create a non-violent and trauma sensitive culture.
- Promote and model the core values of Providence House Mission (Compassion, Non-Violence, Hospitality, and Community) and the Seven Sanctuary Model Commitments to create a non-violent and trauma sensitive culture.
- Integrate the Sanctuary Model SELF (Safety, Emotional Management, Loss and Future) framework into daily practice to ensure quality care and an effective work environment.
Administrative
- Maintains appropriate documentation of services; maintain thorough and accurate records, files and correspondence in written and electronic form.
- Keeps accurate, up-to-date documentation on all clients.
- Assists with any and all data collection systems.
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelors of Science in Social Work or related degree.
- Experience as a person who has been involved with the criminal justice system
- Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently.
- Competent technology management skills, including proficiency with using Microsoft Office; client database management.
- Able to travel within the 5 boroughs
- Compatible philosophy with Providence House and Sanctuary paradigm.
WORK SCHEDULE
- The Peer navigator position is a full time, salaried position. Hours worked will be weekdays flexible to accommodate client availability. Evening and/or weekend work may be required on occasion.
- The office location for this position is Brooklyn, New York. Requires travel between WJP Locations.
SALARY & BENEFITS
Salary is $45,899.00 Annually. Benefits include 12 paid holidays, 3 weeks paid vacation, 3 paid personal days, 12 paid sick days.
