Job description
A Patient Sitter supports the patient care team regarding specific needs of the patient. The Patient Sitter provides direct observation of the assigned patient to ensure safety and prevention of injury at all times. The Patient Sitter will summon the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance or other nursing intervention outside of the sitter job description. The Patient Sitter receives report from the RN regarding any patient specific behaviors to observe. The Patient Sitter will maintain a commitment to the philosophy, mission and values of UMC's Hospital. All Patient Sitters will be expected to complete UMC's Orientation and Safety Awareness training in which specialized job requirements/skills are defined. Overall supervision is provided by the nurse manager or designee.
Patient Care Responsibilities:
- Under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), provides a safe environment for the patient.
- Provides direct and continuous observation of patient: Courteously greets patients, identifies self, and explains purpose, maintains visual contact with the patient at all times.
- Must be within arm’s length/reach at all times.
- Provides support to the patient care team (PCTs, RNs, MD etc.). Ensures patient's safety. Observes and reports to the RN any concerns or changes in the patient behavior. Promptly calls for assistance as needed.
- Provides care within his/her job duties and responsibilities.
- Does not leave patient unattended unless relieved by another staff member. Notifies RN if tubes, IV, catheter, etc. become disconnected. Reports equipment alarms in the patient room to the PCT or RN as applicable.
- Assists with coordination of tests and procedures: The Patient Sitter transitions with the patient throughout his/her hospital stay. Accompanies the patient to other areas of the Hospital for diagnostic tests or upon transfer to other units. Transports patient belongings as required with the patient.
- Keeps patient room neat and orderly. Maintains a safe, orderly and well equipped environment.
- Helps implement safety procedures: The Patient Sitter helps make the patient's environment safe at all times. Evaluates patient's environment for possible hazards and removes those hazards immediately.
- Promotes infection prevention. Washes hands before and after patient care to including prior to going into room and exiting room. Follows isolation precautions according to the Infection Control Policy.
- Competently utilizes technology by demonstrating understanding of the use of unit technology i.e. call systems, electronic medical record, bed controls and TV controls etc. Performs other duties as assigned.
General Housekeeping Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Charge Nurse assumes responsibility for selected general housekeeping responsibilities.
- Changes linen on stretcher as needed (after patient discharge, when soiled, etc.)
- Replaces sharp containers as necessary.
- Checks areas for supplies and restocks as necessary to maintain established standards.

- Consistently assists with the transport of patients, supplies, specimens, and equipment.
Communication
- Communicates effectively with patient, family and all other care professionals.
- Demonstrates tact and sensitivity when interacting with patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers.
- Respects patient privacy, maintains confidentially and displays non-judgmental behavior.
- Recognizes potential guest relations problems and communicates them to the appropriate personnel.
- Participates in and utilizes appropriate intra and inter-departmental communication systems.
- Verbal communication is clear, concise, and relevant.
- Maintains open lines of communication with peers and other members of the health care team.
- Communicates supply needs to appropriate personnel.
- Adheres to Customer Service standards.
Risk Management/Safety
Identifies potential risk management/safety issues related to self, patient, visitors, and co-workers and takes appropriate preventive measures
- Healthcare Experience Preferred
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- BLS Certification from American Heart Association. CCM Certification obtained within 6 months of hire
