POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Patient Access Clerk
DEPARTMENT: Patient Access
CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt
JOB SUMMARY:
Primarily responsible for all clerical communications and data processing
activities related to the pre-registration, quick registration, and
registration of all patients of the facility. Requires a customer relation focused attitude that relates a helpful and friendly atmosphere.
JOB RELATIONSHIPS:
Responsible to: Patient Access Manager
Nature of supervision received: Direct

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job.
The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below; and specific functions may change from time to time.
1. Verifies and correctly enters patient demographic and insurance data
including any insurance notification required.
2. Performs clerical duties such as admission, discharges, transfers
and deaths as needed
3. Completes all required forms and scanning to maintain complete
patient record.
4. Answers switchboard/phone and appropriately responds to emergency
alarms as required.
5. Safely transports patients, supplies and specimens as needed.
6. Responsible for accepting and processing payments.
7. Processes department supply ordering, equipment maintenance, repair
requisitions and department mail.
8. Maintains patient privacy and respects values of individual patients
and provides services accordingly.
9. Provides cooperative and courteous service to patients, physicians,
staff members and visitors in a timely manner with the utmost of
professional behavior.
10. Participates in unit meetings, statistical data gathering and
quality improvement activities including serving on quality
improvement teams.
11. Maintains tidiness of registration and waiting area. Cleans desk,
counter tops, cabinets, etc. as needed.
12. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, safety,
environmental and infection control standards.
13. Performs other duties as assigned.
ER Specific:
1. Observes and reports all patient concerns and changes in condition
to a Nurse immediately.
2. Maintains current BLS certification.
3. Performs and documents ER patient care technician duties while
maintaining aseptic technique as directed including:
a. vital signs
b. EKGs
c. finger stick blood glucose monitoring
d. inserts and removes urinary catheter
e. administers enemas as directed
f. obtains and records patient specimens
g. Assists RN with other patient care duties
h. Maintains patient room cleanliness as needed
Rehabilitation Specific:
1. Schedules and authorizes therapy visits
2. Contacts physician office for written order and files appropriately
QUALIFICATIONS:
The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this position.
EDUCATION AND FORMAL TRAINING:
High school diploma or equivalent.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
Telephone, computer, and insurance experience related to the medical
profession preferred. Previous secretarial/nursing assistance experience preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Typing and basic mathematical skills. Must demonstrate the ability to
effectively communicate with and understand patients and customers of all
ages. Ability to prioritize, multi-task and work with frequent
interruptions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must have the manual dexterity to operate office equipment. Must be able
to speak and hear. Must be able to sit for extended periods of time. Must be able to set priorities for multiple tasks. Must be able to withstand constant standing; walking to various departments and be able to withstand constant bending, stooping, lifting, and stretching, utilizing the proper body mechanics.
EXPOSURE CATEGORY:
Category II. Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or
tissues.
