Job description
Under general supervision by the Painting Supervisor, performs a variety of skilled and semi skilled work in painting the interior and exterior surfaces of buildings and painting lines and other markings on parking lots, game courts, and other surfaces for the painting-related portions of projects or service orders undertaken by the Construction Division of the Engineering and Construction Services Department. Mixes, applies and removes paint; masks trimmings and fixtures and repairs and removes damaged drywall. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-Exempt and considered a DRIVING position.
Essential Functions: (Essential functions may vary among positions, but may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.)
1. Prepares interior surfaces for painting by repairing holes, cracks and other fixtures with plaster, putty, speckling compound, or other filler. Replaces drywall, if necessary; sands repaired surfaces, and primes the entire surface. Prepares surfaces by removing previous coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel or lacquer by sanding surface or using paint remover. Prior to painting, removes electrical outlets, masks trimmings, windowpanes and other notable fixtures and surfaces that are not to be painted. Places drop cloth/tarp on floor and on furniture or equipment. Determines appropriate paint to use based on the type of surface to be painted and the uses of the room. Paints interior surfaces using a variety of tools and equipment, including brushes, rollers and air powered or airless paint guns.
2. Prepares exterior surfaces for painting by replacing bricks, repairing/replacing trim and/or siding panels, and/or repairing/refinishing stucco surfaces as needed; determines appropriate paint to be used base on type of surface to be painted; thoroughly cleans surfaces using high pressure water spray and/or a wire brush or scraper; paints exterior surfaces using a variety of tools and equipment, including scaffolding, brushes, rollers and air powered or airless paint guns.
3. Following direction of supervisor, applies coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel, or lacquer to decorate and protect interior or exterior surfaces, trimmings, and fixtures of buildings, and other structures. Applies paint, varnish, stain, enamel or lacquer using spray painting equipment, brushes, rollers, texture machine, pavement painter and other usual tools of the trade. May hang wallpaper, stencil, spray or brush on decorative designs, as directed by supervisor.
4. Prepares parking lots, streets, and game courts for painting lines and other markings by thoroughly cleaning the areas to be painted with high pressure water spray and/or push brooms; measures out lines or other markings to be painted; tapes outlines and masks areas not to be painted; applies special paints using brushes, rollers, airless paint guns, or line marking machine to paint the lines and markings.
5. Safely operates electrical/power/manual tools and equipment, including but not limited to spray paint equipment, brushes, rollers and other equipment used for painting-related portions of projects and service orders. Hand tools may include, but are not limited to: putty knife, paint brush, paint roller, tape measure, and spray gun.
6. Maintains equipment by cleaning after each use, and brining maintenance needs to supervisor's attention.
7. Loads and unloads materials and equipment at job sites; drives to and from job sites; assists in removal of abandoned materials as necessary to provide construction and maintenance of single-family housing, Community buildings, and SRPMIC infrastructure.
8. Assists in setting up scaffolding or sets up ladders to perform tasks above ground level; ensures that such structures are used in a safe manner.
9. Completes work in compliance with OSHA, building and other applicable safety codes.
10. Performs other job-related duties as assigned to maintain and enhance program operations.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:
- Knowledge of painting methods, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment related to construction and maintenance of single-family housing, Community buildings, and SRPMIC infrastructure.
- Knowledge in applying and removing paint, varnishes or other material from surfaces.
- Knowledge of preparation of room or building for painting.
- Knowledge of general policies, procedures and standards followed in construction trades.
- Knowledge of current building and safety codes, OSHA rules and regulations pertaining to construction and maintenance of single-family housing, Community buildings, Community infrastructure, and related systems.
- Knowledge of principles, concepts, methods, techniques, and practices related to scheduling the painting portions of construction and maintenance of single-family housing, Community buildings, and Community infrastructure.
Skill in applying and removing paint, varnishes, or materials from surfaces.- Skill in applying paint and other finishes using a variety of tools and equipment, including but not limited to: texture machine, paint sprayer, pavement painter, tape measure, brushes, rollers, and air powered or airless paint guns.
- Skill in preparing a variety of interior and exterior surfaces, including streets, parking lots, and game courts, for painting, e.g., masking trimmings, windowpanes or other fixtures.
- Skill in the proper inspection, installation and repair of painting-related fixtures and equipment, including scaffolding and ladders.
- Skill in safely operating electrical/power/manual tools and equipment.
Ability to work in dirt and dusty conditions and with paint thinner, drywall tape, and drywall texture.- Ability to work in weather-exposed situation.
- Ability to work at heights up to 50 feet.
- Ability to work from oral instructions.
- Ability to lift, stand, kneel, bend, stoop and carry objects, including but not limited to painting tools, materials and equipment, weighing 50 - 90 pounds and to otherwise physically perform and complete painting tasks as directed by Painting Supervisor.
Education: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
- For enrolled Community Members without a GED, must obtain a GED. Requires participation in the HR GED Program and successful completion of the Arizona state certified exam in order to continue employment with SRPMIC.
Experience: One year of full time painting work, completion of a post-high school course in interior and exterior painting. Must have own general tools of the trade.
Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of experience and education that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered when filling the position. Must possess a current driver's license and reliable transportation.
Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of an extensive background check and drug screening.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License.
Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check. Employees are subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
