Who we are
The Colonias Program was founded in 1991 by State Legislature and is housed within the College of Architecture. Our mission is to develop and deliver solutions to enhance the quality of life for residents living in colonias and economically distressed areas in Texas. These are residents living without one or more of the major infrastructure such as potable water, paved roads, sewage system, storm drainage, and/or electricity. The TAMU Colonias Program, through an asset-based participatory community development approach, builds the capacity of local residents to actively participate in creating sustainable solutions to local challenges.

The Outreach Worker II will work in coordination with the Colonias Program to educate and provide SARS-CoV-2/ COVID-19 educational resources to participants in targeted communities regarding testing, vaccines, and prevention practices. What you need to know
This is a temporary, part-time position. Must commit to work on the project up to 19 hours a week, including some weekends. Must be able to travel around the community to discuss testing, vaccines, and prevention practices.
COVID-19 information: Texas A&M University monitors and updates our recruiting, hiring and onboarding processes to align with local, state and federally mandated health guidelines to keep employees, prospective employees, and visitors as safe as possible. Each department has established both remote and in-person procedures for conducting these processes, which include sanitizing common spaces, a mask policy, and maintaining safe physical distancing to the extent possible. Departments will provide the procedures to be followed at each step of the recruiting process.
Required Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED, or any equivalent combination of education and experience
- Two (2) years of relevant work or significant volunteer experience in community health, social worker or education
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Must have the ability to perform complex and diverse administrative duties that involve application of procedures and demonstrate appropriate judgment within the CHW scope of work
- Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
- Must be Bilingual (Spanish/English)
Preferred Licenses and Certifications:
- Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) – Certified CHW
- Class C Driver’s License
Responsibilities:
- Community Support - Establishes rapport with individuals in targeted communities that are being asked to participate in the project. Motivates individuals to get all members of their family tested and promote testing to others in their community. Informs individuals about the availability and resources for COVID-19 vaccine.
- Meetings - Attends weekly meetings to report back to the team on the outreach initiative and update material to include new COVID-19 information.
- Training - Attends training with all project team members to continuously expand knowledge and understanding of SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19, community needs, resources, services and programs available.
- Documentation - Works with the team to document recruitment and education activities. Creates reports for supervisor.
- Outreach - Conducts outreach, models healthy behaviors, and coaches community members in effective prevention practices to reduce risk of infection.
- Other Duties - Performs other duties as assigned.
