TITLE: *Organizing Specialist, Southwest or West

LOCATION: *Southwest or West: This position will work remotely in the Southwestern or Western region of the U.S. We are seeking applicants based in and able to travel easily within/to the following states: AZ, CA, CO, OR, TX and WA

These states were identified based on campaign and congressional targets as well as analysis of existing and potential Oxfam supporters. City/geographic priorities within these regions will be determined after positions are hired_

PURPOSE OF POSITION: *Oxfam’s campaign department mobilizes and collaborates with people taking action in their communities and organizes influential leaders to use their power for change to fight inequality to end poverty and injustice. We are seeking an energetic organizer with volunteer recruitment and engagement expertise to join a team that is building out a revamped distributed organizing effort to activate and support leaders across the US to organize in their communities and grow the number of people taking action to address inequality.
The Organizing Specialist will recruit, train and engage a new and diverse cadre of community leaders in select states in their region (Southwest or West – see above) who are passionate about fighting inequality and for climate justice locally and globally. The position will implement digital and offline strategies and tools to grow support for Oxfam and advance our campaigns while supporting volunteers in building and strengthening their own networks and communities.
COORDINATES WITH: The organizing specialist will closely collaborate with the Grassroots Advocacy Manager and an Organizing Specialist in other regions, and a Senior Advocacy Advisor who runs the grasstops Sisters on the Planet program. This role will also actively partner with the climate campaign team - including colleagues from policy, media, digital, and with staff across the US.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the Grassroots Advocacy Manger in the development and implementation of a grassroots organizing program to demand policymakers take action to fight inequality and end poverty
  • Under the guidance of the Grassroots Advocacy Manager, serve as point for volunteer engagement in 3-5 states in their region (Southwest or West), including:

o Identifying and recruiting volunteer leaders
o Ensure volunteer leaders are adequately and appropriately trained and equipped to represent Oxfam and recruit additional volunteers by:
§ developing and delivering training curriculum and materials
§ producing ongoing educational and messaging materials
§ creating digital content for volunteer leaders
§ providing other organizing advice and guidance as needed
o Support volunteer leaders in setting and reaching targets for growing the number and diversity of people taking action and joining the Oxfam community
o Create and nurture online volunteer communities on social platforms
o Serve as main point of contact for volunteer leaders in their region (Southwest or West) ensuring clear and effective two-way communications, including volunteer feedback and input to campaigns
o Organize or support volunteers in leading their own meetings with policymakers, hosting events and rallies, media stunts or other tactics to generate attention and put pressure on decisionmakers to take action to fight inequality and end poverty
o Ensure volunteers leaders are informed of and in compliance with Oxfam Code of Conduct and Safeguarding Policies

Collaborate with volunteers and colleagues across campaigns, digital, media, policy and government relations to develop and execute creative, fun and inventive tactics to reach policymakers and new volunteers

  • Apply feminist principles in relationships, spaces and work with volunteers, colleagues & external individuals, and ensure the organizing work advances Oxfam’s journey to become an anti-racist organization
  • Experiment with and improve existing tools – such as the Oxfam America Hunger Banquet - to engage volunteers in advocacy and build power for Oxfam
  • Build relationships with and facilitate in person engagement with grasstops Oxfam supporters such as Sisters on the Planet Ambassadors, as well as with corporate & policymaker targets in their region (Southwest or West) as needed
  • Ensure all data or information collected by volunteers is integrated into Oxfam’s contact management systems

  • Up to 35% overnight travel within the US primarily in their region (Southwest or West) with some travel to Oxfam offices in Boston and/or DC; some evening/weekend work required.

$51,150 - $71,610 Minimum to Maximum commensurate with experience

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of work experience, education, and training.

Experience and Core Competencies:

*
Minimum 3 years experience organizing for political or policy change on social justice or equity issues

  • Demonstrated success in managing, training and coaching organizers or volunteer communities – in both online and in person settings
  • Proficiency in digital organizing and advocacy content creation across various channels (e-mail, SMS and social) as well as building and maintaining communities using digital organizing tools and platforms
  • Commitment to applying feminist principles and anti-racist approaches in organizing work; including actively identifying and addressing injustices that we may be perpetuating.
  • Ability to represent Oxfam in a variety of settings and with diverse audiences
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, in a remote setting and set priorities among multiple tasks
  • Good judgment, initiative and ability to anticipate problems and follow through with confidence

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Preference for candidates who are fluent in Spanish
