Southside Medical Center, Inc. (SMC) was founded in 1967 as the Atlanta Southside Comprehensive Health Center. We are a federally qualified health center (FQHC) that provides primary health care and related services to the medically underserved and uninsured.
SMC has 12 locations across the state of Georgia. Our main Center is located near the Georgia State Football Stadium in Fulton County. We also have two other locations in Fulton County: one at Dobbs Elementary School and the other in East Point. We have two locations in Dekalb County on Gresham Road and in Decatur, and three locations in Clayton County in Lovejoy, Riverdale and Forest Park. One location in Gwinnett County in Norcross, and a location in both Spalding and Butts Counties, Duluth and our newest location, Cleveland Avenue Immediate Care in East Point.

OPTOMETRY DEPARTMENT COORDINATOR
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
Responsible to the Optometrist. Responsible for the smooth and efficient day-to-day operation. Assists the optometrist by working up the patients. Assists the front desk by making appointment and checking out patients.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF POSITION DUTIES:
1. Be knowledgeable of Southside Medical Center, Inc. policies and procedures and implement them in the department.
2. Coordinates activities with other departments.
3. Data collection and record keeping as completing daily logs sheets and Visual Field Data.
4. Secretarial and clerical functions; answering phones and making appointments, etc.
5. Computer workâgenerates and completes encounters.
6. Billing and collections functions.
7. Makes chart request for daily appointments and call patients to remind them of appointments.
8. Registers new patients.
9. Resolves patient complaints and other day-to-day problems.
10. Takes care of department correspondence.
11. Inventory department supplies and other supplies.
12. Completes and processes purchase orders.
13. Performs patient refund requests and payroll deduction forms.
14. Handles equipment repair problems and other problems of the physical facility and work orders.
15. Orientates and trains employees.
16. Attends workshops and other outside meeting as needed.
17. Handles patient emergencies in department when Providers are not there.
18. Does incident reports.
19. Assists patients coming to department for services.
20. Work-up patients of providers, do patient history, take Optomap Photos, check visual acuities.
21. Document clinical results into the HER.
22. Assists patients with picking out eyeglasses.
23. Completes orders for Medicaid eyeglasses.
24. Checks eyeglasses coming from Lab for accuracy and quality.
25. Performs visual field and OCT tests on patients.
26. Assists with research projects.
27. Handles patient referrals and setting up appointments for surgery.
28. Does filing for department.
29. Monitors and directs patient flow and helps reduce waiting time.
30. Performs work functions and duties of other employees in the department.
31. Cleans and organized examining room for work areas.
32. Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Office management and patient care experience in the optometry field.
2. Ability to prioritize activities. Good judgment and decision making.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
2 years of clinical experience assisting an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Requires frequent walking, standing, stooping and bending to operate department equipment. Requires manual dexterity. Requires color vision and depth perception and visual acuity correctable vision to 20/20. May require some sitting for prolonged periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items up to 50 pounds
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to communicable diseases and other conditions common to a clinic environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
