Job description

GMAT Ninja LLC is seeking a few exceptional tutors to join our elite instructional team. The tutoring role is a full-time position. Location is flexible; applicants can be based anywhere in the USA or UK or elsewhere in the world.

We're an unusual company, and we want to know as much as possible about you before offering interviews. So please be aware that we require a cover letter to consider your application. It doesn't need to be fancy or formal, but it's important for us to see more than just a resume.

Please keep reading for more about us and what we're looking for in a tutor.

About us

GMAT Ninja provides test preparation and admissions services for business school applicants. Charles Bibilos, founder and CEO, has been teaching and tutoring since 2001, and he created GMAT Ninja in 2009.

We’re growing and evolving as a company, but our goal has never been growth for its own sake. There are plenty of successful test-prep companies that pursue growth at the expense of quality and perhaps even integrity; we’ve never wanted to become one of them.

Instead, we hire tutors and pursue new projects only when we know that they’ll be GREAT, and only when they provide something new and special for test-takers. If you join us, we’d invite you to collaborate on projects that you find fulfilling and inspiring and enjoyable.

Currently, we primarily focus on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), since MBA programs still prefer the GMAT for most applicants. We also help students prepare for the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) and Executive Assessment (EA). As we grow, we’ll continue working on the following projects:

  • Intensive GMAT workshops, offered in major world capitals and on-site at select companies
  • Honest GMAT and GRE guides and practice resources that avoid the gimmicks and empty promises often found in test-prep resources
  • GMAT and GRE instructional videos
  • Innovative, industry-leading support for students with test anxiety and other non-academic barriers to their academic performance

In other words: we want to make sure that our work as educators has breadth and life to it. We want you to be a part of creating something new and exciting – and we’ll never want you to be an occasionally-bored, punch-the-clock employee.

About you

Do you love teaching? Do you enjoy crushing standardized tests? That’s a good start. Here’s what we expect to see in our candidates:

  • Proven ability to kick the snot out of standardized tests. If you’ve never touched the GMAT or GRE before, that’s cool, but we expect super-elite (~99th percentile) scores on whichever standardized exams you’ve taken, and we'll likely ask you to take a GMAT and/or GRE practice exam as part of the vetting process.
  • Incredible perceptiveness and interpersonal skills. To be a great GMAT and GRE tutor, you have to be great at getting inside your students’ heads. So if you have that talent, you’re in the right place.
  • Interest in tutoring as a long-term, full-time career. It will take several months to become a good tutor — and years to become a great one. It’s not worth going down this path unless you’re pretty sure that you’ll want to invest the time to become amazing at it. Sorry, but we definitely aren’t looking for part-time or short-term tutors.
  • Some teaching or tutoring experience — but not necessarily with standardized testing. As long as it’s clear that you have great teaching instincts, elite test-taking skills, and a passion for teaching, we can teach you the rest.
  • Outstanding verbal skills in general, and writing skills in particular. Sorry, we’re not interested in hiring a quantitative specialist at this time. We also need all of our tutors to be great at quant, so unfortunately, we're not hiring verbal specialists, either.
  • Schedule flexibility. It might take several months to learn everything you need to know about GMAT tutoring, depending on your experience — and our students often prefer to meet outside of normal business hours. So if you have some schedule flexibility, it will make both training and tutoring much, much easier.
  • Collaborative spirit. We're a small team; if you join us, you’ll be our 8th tutor. There’s plenty of room for all of us to find creative ways to collaborate, make each other better at tutoring, and provide a better service for our students.
  • Good question-writing and explanation-writing skills. We develop a lot of our own practice materials, so we definitely want partners who can contribute to those efforts.

If you decide to join us, we’ll make sure that you have the skills, flexibility, and support to be among the top 10 or 20 tutors in the industry from day one. And then we’ll make sure that you keep getting better, and that we find ways to keep you challenged and engaged over time.

We’re looking for committed educators who want to learn and grow with us. We’ll invest heavily in making you great, but greatness takes time, and this partnership will only make sense if you can see yourself working with us full-time for at least four years.

Benefits

  • Training: We’ll train you to be one of the very best tutors in the industry. Large test-prep companies tend to teach a narrow curriculum, and they like to “script” their teachers. We want you to be yourself, and develop your own awesome style. In other words, we’ll work hard to make you the best possible version of yourself.
  • Peers: You’ll get to work with a handful of the world’s most brilliant stand-up comedians. OK, maybe not. (Editor’s note: definitely not.) But we’re fun, nice people who try to keep things interesting.
  • Flexible location: This is a remote position. We teach online from all over the world. Tutoring is always live, one-on-one, and personal, but the tutor’s physical location is flexible. Sessions are conducted via video conferencing (Skype, Google Hangouts, Zoom, etc.). As with any telecommuting job, you'll need a reliable internet connection to make virtual tutoring just as seamless as though you were there in person.
  • Lifestyle: You’ll have a flexible schedule, and can plan your workload and hours in advance. So if you’re a traveler or a filmmaker or a novelist or a food blogger or something, tutoring can be an amazing way to support your other passions.
  • Industry-leading compensation: If you’re successful here, you’ll ultimately earn more than tutors at any large test-prep company.

How to apply

To learn more, please check out https://www.gmatninja.com/gmat-ninja-vision.

To apply, send over a detailed resume, a rundown of your standardized test scores, and an informal introduction to gmatninjallc at gmail dot com. We’re looking for something more interesting, informal, and personal than a standard cover letter. Please be yourself, and tell us about your passions in life and why you’re interested in becoming a GMAT and GRE tutor. No phone calls, please.
