Washington State Ferries (WSF), a division of WSDOT, is the largest ferry system in the U.S. and safely and efficiently carries nearly 25 million people a year through some of the most majestic scenery in the world. The WSF system is an essential part of Washington's transportation network, linking communities on both sides of Puget Sound with the San Juan Islands and internationally to Sidney, British Columbia. WSF has more than 1,800 employees throughout the Puget Sound region on vessels, in terminals, at the Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility, and at the headquarters facility in Seattle.

The Opportunity
WSF is seeking dedicated, career-minded professionals to serve as On-Call Terminal Attendants. Our Ferry Terminals are located as far north as Anacortes and as far south as Point Defiance in Tacoma, WA. As a Terminal Attendant, you will assist with janitorial and light maintenance duties, traffic control, collection of boarding passes, transfer or “Proof of Payment” documents, and terminal equipment operations, and /or serves as a watchman during vessel tie-up. Terminal employees play a critical role in creating a positive, memorable experience for millions of passengers traveling through the largest maritime highway system in the United States.

What to Expect
As an on-call employee, you must be available for all shifts including morning, mid-morning, evening, weekends, and holidays. These essential on-call positions provide backup for scheduled absences but are even more critical when it comes to filling last-minute staff shortages that require a quick response time.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you/the Terminal Attendant will:


  • Safely and efficiently load and unload the vessels, working closely with deck officers and deck crews.
  • Operate a 2-way radio to communicate with First Mate and ticket sellers on load status, potential delays, and priority load requirements.
  • Use hand signals and voice commands, to properly distribute and ensure loads are balanced.
  • Operate bullnose tractor.
  • Collect fees and issue passenger tickets.
  • Maintain and clean, the service area and bathrooms.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid unrestricted Driver’s License and ability to operate heavy equipment, such as a bullnose tractor and transfer spans.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of the job offer.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to learn the WSF point-of-sale system.
  • Ability to read and interpret tide table and Tariff rates sheet (fees schedule).
  • Ability to greet customers in a friendly, professional manner.
  • Ability to travel to various terminal facilities as needed.
  • Ability to learn and abide by all prescribed safety and security procedures and maintain compliance.
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods at a time, use both arms and hands to provide hand signals and directions as needed.
  • Occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work outside in various weather conditions.

Important Notes
  • This recruitment will be used to fill multiple on-call positions.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
  • Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 357-16-197 mandates that all employees who work for executive cabinet agencies (which includes the Department of Transportation) must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Compliance with this mandate is a condition of employment with WSDOT. An exemption may be granted for religious or medical purposes; however, accommodations will be subject to approval based on the essential functions required of the position.
  • Expected start date for this recruitment is March 13, 2023.
