Job description

GENERAL DUTIES:

· Evaluates and treats inmate health care conditions upon referral.

· Functions as a consultant to the nursing staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Orders appropriate diagnostic tests and procedures to effectively diagnose and treat the inmate's health condition.

· Draws blood specimens for testing and performing other comparable procedures when personnel that customarily perform these procedures are not available.

· Initiates referrals to other members of the health care team, monitors the schedule of patients for special tests.

· Counsel’s inmates on preventive care, medical problems, and use of prescribed treatment.

· Performs routine wound care, minor debridement, and dressing changes.

· Generally, assesses inmate's health status and assists the assigned physician with inmate management as required.

· Utilizes appropriate infection control techniques.

· Establishes individualized treatment plans and ensures the continuity of care for inmates requiring on-going health care services.

· Participates in on-site in-service training.

· Assists in the development and revision of NP policies and protocols in conjunction with the Health Services Administrator and Medical Director.

· Utilizes the results of Quality Assurance to improve standards of inmate care and standards of nursing practice.

· Complies with all rules, directives, policies, procedures and protocols of the Department and Prison Health Services.

· Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

· Current licensure as a Registered Nurse/Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner to practice.

· Experience as a practicing Advanced Nurse Practitioner in appropriate area of practice.
