Job Overview

  • The Oncology Nurse Navigator (ONN) is a professional registered nurse (RN) with oncology-specific clinical knowledge who offers individualized assistance to patients, families, and caregivers to help overcome healthcare system barriers. Using the nursing process, an ONN provides education and resources to facilitate informed decision-making and timely access to quality health and psychosocial care throughout all phases of the cancer continuum. This person works with a multidisciplinary team to coordinate improved comprehensive cancer services to patients.

The Oncology Nurse Navigator will establish early contact with cancer patients to eliminate the barriers to timely cancer staging, referrals and treatment. The ONN will function as an advocate, educator and counselor for cancer patients with a primary focus on a designated disease specific site (breast, lung, head& neck, GI, general). The ONN will coordinate patient access throughout the continuum of care in collaboration with any necessary clinical groups or multi-disciplinary teams. The ONN will serve as a clinical resource with expertise in oncology care management and serve as a liaison throughout the healthcare system and external community.

The Oncology Nurse Navigator will work with Marketing, Community Benefit, the Foundation, community cancer partners (Cancer Pathways Midwest, Chemo Buddies, the American Cancer Society), clinical teams and the Oncology Service Line manager to develop new services and programs by coordinating interaction between patients, physicians, staff and the community.

Normal work schedule is 8-hour shifts, Monday through Friday. Additional time outside of the normal work schedule (e.g., evenings and weekends) may be required to meet the patient and community needs.
