The mission of the Natural Resources Group (NRG) within the Division of Environment and Planning is to protect, restore, expand, and manage New York City’s natural spaces and green infrastructure to maximize their ecological and social benefits for all New Yorkers. The Division is responsible for planning, citywide urban forestry, and ecological and horticulture initiatives. The Stewardship Team, within NRG, supports the Division and engages the public by providing diverse opportunities for direct care of natural resources and the urban forest across the City. The Urban Field Station is a partnership of NYC Parks, the USDA Forest Service, and the Natural Areas Conservancy, which provides a network of practitioners and researchers addressing urban land management, ecology, stewardship, and conservation.

Major Responsibilities
  • Under the direction of the Stewardship Outreach Supervisor and Senior Scientist, coordinate and support natural areas outreach and education.
  • Support outreach and education events in forests, grasslands and wetlands across New York City, with the purpose of increasing and elevating community engagement.
  • Conduct ongoing outreach to partners/collaborators for service events, education initiatives, panel discussions at the Urban Field Station and elsewhere, in relation to natural areas.
  • Supervise employees and volunteers, instructing them in project coordination techniques and the proper use and care of equipment and materials.
  • Track and support volunteer recruitment and engagement progress towards stewardship program goals.
  • Manage volunteer database and prepare correspondence and reports as needed.
  • Support recognition opportunities for volunteers and facilitate access to volunteer resources.
  • Respond to and create opportunities for volunteer feedback around program offerings.
  • Assist in registration and leading volunteers or community partners at events as assigned.
  • Help coordinate civic or community science programming related to natural areas (e.g., City Nature Challenge).
  • Support field work and management activities in NYC forests, grasslands and wetlands.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

Preferred Skills

1. Ability to maintain a flexible schedule by working weekends and occasional evenings.
2. Familiarity with and passion for natural areas in and flora and fauna of NYC.
3. Bachelor’s Degree environmental science, education, ecology, natural resource management or a related field.
4. Highly proficient with Microsoft office programs, including MS Word, Excel and Access.
5. Experience working with training, educating, and motivating volunteers and working with diverse organizations.
6. Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
7. Demonstrated commitment to public service and the environment.
8. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, including the ability to work on a team.
9. Valid New York State driver’s license.
