An Off-Campus Work-Study Position
The primary mission of the Ghost Ranch Florence Ellis Museum of Anthropology is to preserve the cultural heritage of the surrounding northern New Mexico region. We also offer informal education to area school students. The position of Museum Graduate Assistant is to perform a wide-variety of duties related to the Museums’ operations, collection care, research studies, educational programs, and visitor tours that support the Museums' mission. Museum Graduate Assistants plan, organize and conduct research in scientific, cultural, historical, or artistic fields for use in the Museums’ education projects, exhibits, presentations and publications. Graduate Assistants rely on their knowledge and judgment to plan and accomplish goals and a variety of tasks. They are familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures regarding the care and cataloging of anthropological materials. A basic knowledge of field research methods in anthropology is advantageous. This entry-level position offers an opportunity for a graduate student to hone their skills in all aspects of museum operations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with inventory, registration, and cataloguing of the Museums’ collections
- Perform limited preventative conservation work and reconstruction work on the Museums’ collections
- Maintain organization and cleanliness of the Museums, collection rooms, and labs
Research
- Conduct historical research using both primary and secondary sources, and collection material
- Analyze historical materials for authenticity, accuracy, and context
- Answer questions from colleagues on curatorial matters within the provisions of the Ghost Ranch Museums’ Collections Management Policy
Interpretation and Exhibits
- Write scripts, labels and other texts about Museums’ collections
- Assist other staff in planning and producing interpretive and educational programs and tours
- Give tours related to individual research and education experiences
- Assist with community outreach opportunities including school tours
- Engage with Museum visitors who have questions regarding exhibits

Schedule and Conditions:
A flexible schedule is necessary since Ghost Ranch Museums are open to the public six days a week. The position will follow guidelines established in the Ghost Ranch Policy Handbook. Since the position involves working with the community and school groups, a background check is required. Employees at Ghost Ranch are required to have proof of COVID vaccination. Ghost Ranch is located in a high desert environment at an elevation of 6400’. The Museum Assistant must be able to tolerate the working and climate conditions, and be able to lift weights up to 35 lbs. associated with specimens, supplies and equipment. The Ellis Anthropology Museum building is separated from the Hall Paleontology Museum by an enclosed courtyard. An adjacent building (the Burns Building) houses a classroom, collection storage and a paleontology prep lab. These adobe buildings have wall heating systems and are cooled by ceiling fans. Cafeteria meals and housing provided. The housing provided is designed for a single person—a two-room, gas-heated, adobe-style building with a single bathroom to be shared by two individuals.
Education Requirement:
Ideal candidate is a student pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree in anthropology, archaeology, museum studies, or other related field; or fulfilling an internship requirement for graduation.
Status:
20-24 hrs/week. Cafeteria meals and housing provided. The length of the position will be determined by the limitations of the UNM Off-Campus Work-Study Program.
