Job description

Reporting directly to the supervisor for the assigned Department/Division/District in the office of the Clerk for the Circuit Court of Cook County (Clerk’s Office), the Motor Vehicle Operator is responsible for the distribution and collection of designated court files, materials, consisting of, but not limited to, supplies, equipment, recyclables and other materials, by operating Cook County box trucks or other assigned Cook County vehicles on designated routes. The Motor Vehicle Operator adheres to a daily delivery and pick-up schedule, loading and unloading materials in a safe manner that ensures the product and vehicle are undamaged, strictly complies with all safety and Department of Transportation regulations, policies, and procedures, inspects vehicle, remains accountable for all assigned equipment, and performs and meets all physical requirements related to the position.

Essential Job Duties

  • Adheres to authorized, dedicated delivery routes that may require numerous stops throughout the daily schedule, including delivery of all case files, supply orders, or other designated items and materials assigned for delivery or pick-up as outlined on the daily delivery and pick-up schedule.
  • Responsible for immediately contacting the Warehouse/Records Center Manager for direction in the event a delivery or pick-up cannot be made as scheduled.
  • Checks case files, totes, supply orders, or other designated items and materials to be placed on an assigned Cook County vehicle to confirm items are part of the day’s schedule.
  • Loads assigned Cook County vehicle by placing case files, totes, supply orders, or other designated items in the vehicle in a manner that is safe and minimizes damage to items and vehicle.
  • Accountable at end of day for all equipment assigned to the vehicle that is required for the delivery and/or pick-up of materials, including but not limited to dock plate, pallet jack and stabilizer poles.
  • Responsible for operating equipment utilized for hauling and warehouse operations, including, but not limited to, an electric pallet jack, forklift, and scales.
  • Performs interior and exterior vehicle inspections; reports any vehicle defects, accidents, traffic violations or damage to the vehicle before and after completion of the route.
  • Complies with all safety and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, including the specific Orders regarding Cook County vehicle operations and the Warehouse/Records Center policies and procedures.
  • Participates in and complies with continuous truck and customer service training.
  • Abides by the State of Illinois driving laws and rules of the road.
  • Acts as helper on the delivery team and acts as back-up driver for vehicles.
  • Retrieves, compiles, and distributes requested records and information.
  • Reads and understands labeling and coding on boxes; reviews shipping documents to determine assignments; makes pick up and deliveries to and from the correct location and is accountable for all deliveries.
  • Maintains eligibility for access to all buildings for deliveries and pickups.
  • Provides support for other members of the team.
  • Performs functions related to the Imaging and Document Management System (IDMS) process, where applicable.
  • Performs functions related to Electronic Filing (eFiling), where applicable.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED. (Must upload proof of education in the Attachments section of the application by the posting deadline.)

  • One (1) year of full-time work experience as a van or truck driver.

  • Valid State of Illinois Class “D” driver’s license. (Must upload proof of valid driver’s license in the Attachments section of the application by the posting deadline.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university. (Must upload proof of education in the Attachments section of the application by the posting deadline.)

  • Two (2) years of full-time work experience as a van or truck driver.

  • Valid State of Illinois Class “B” or higher commercial driver’s license with Full Air Brakes endorsement. (Must upload proof of valid driver’s license in the Attachments section of the application by the posting deadline.)

  • Current employee of the Clerk of the Circuit Court.

Post-Employment Requirement

  • Must currently possess a valid State of Illinois Class “B” or higher commercial driver’s license with Full Air Brakes endorsement OR obtain a valid State of Illinois Class “B” or higher commercial driver’s license with Full Air Brakes endorsement within 6 months of employment, and maintain it as a condition of employment.

  • Ability to work and concentrate in a fast paced, sometimes noisy, open office environment.

  • Ability to work in non-climate controlled environments.

  • Possess specific vision capabilities including, close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus necessary to operate a motor vehicle and perform vision-related tasks.

  • Possess excellent communication and customer service skills and be customer oriented.

  • Ability to obtain and convey information and/or guidelines and read and comprehend instructions and procedures.

  • Ability to demonstrate proper telephone and mobile radio etiquette.

  • Knowledge of coding, filing systems and departmental procedures.

  • Ability to demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to demonstrate good customer service skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to push, pull, move and lift up to 40 pounds.

  • Ability to push, pull, move and lift more than 40 pounds using assistive devices.

  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs on a regular basis.

  • Ability to sit, squat, stand, kneel, bend and crawl on a regular basis.

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk or move for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to repetitively use hands to operate standard office equipment and handle documents.

  • Ability to meet Illinois Secretary of State medical and physical requirements to obtain and/or maintain State of Illinois Class B commercial driver’s license.
