Job description

In 2022, Butler Academy was rated as an Excellent school by the SC Department of Education, the highest rating available. We are seeking the world's most amazing Social Studies Teacher for the 2023-24 school year in hopes of pushing our Excellence to the next level.

Are you an amazing storyteller? Are you passionate about history, about teaching history, and about young people? Do you possess a genuine interest and concern for students and an ability to convey your love of history in the classroom setting? If so, then we’d love to have you as BA’s founding middle school social studies teacher. At BA, we teach students, not content, and we’re looking for a teacher who is committed to garnering interest and curiosity in world history and politics. As our first ever middle school social studies teacher, you will have the opportunity to help us shape an inclusive content knowledge pipeline that extends from 5th grade social studies to AP U.S. History in high school.

At Butler Academy, our goal is to engage teachers who are committed to closing the achievement gap by making BA a dynamic learning environment where every child is genuinely embraced and uplifted. As a Compassionate School (also called a trauma-informed school) we are focused on helping our teachers and support staff understand adverse childhood experiences and fundamental brain development. This understanding will help them craft pedagogy, recognize the importance of self-care, correctly interpret behaviors, and manage negative behaviors successfully with compassion.

Our Model:

  • BA operates on a modified year-round calendar and will serve grades K – 6 for the 2022-23 school year, adding a grade each subsequent year until we are K – 12
  • We have two classes per grade level, with a goal of 20 scholars per class
  • We place strong emphasis on social-emotional learning
  • We value rigor and exceptionally high expectations in addition to differentiated support to meet the needs of all scholars

As part of your commitment, we ask that you:

  • Embody Butler Academy’s mission, vision, and core values.
  • Implement our adopted standards-aligned curricula with fidelity.
  • Provide engaging, differentiated, appropriately paced, and rigorous instruction in whole-class, small group, and individual settings.
  • Establish and maintain a culture of growth and achievement in your classroom.
  • Lead SEL-based Morning Meetings with your scholars each day.
  • Uphold school-wide and class policies, rules and consequences at all times.
  • Analyze student achievement data with colleagues, instructional coaches, and leadership team members to strategically respond to the learning needs of your scholars.
  • Use data to inform instructional development and delivery.
  • Communicate and collaborate with families regarding the social and emotional well-being and academic progress of each scholar.
  • Collaborate with other staff members and actively participate in professional development and learning activities.
  • Use feedback to make productive changes in performance.
  • Be accountable for student mastery of academic standards.
  • Participate in school activities and school-related community events throughout the year.

What you’ll need:

  • Bachelor’s degree (conferred by July 1)
  • SC Teacher certification (or transferrable certification from another state)
  • An enthusiastic approach towards weekly coaching and feedback conversations
  • A strong belief that all scholars can succeed; regardless of their race, class, or gender
  • An ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • A commitment to constant professional growth and development
  • Preference: experience and demonstrated success working with underserved students
  • Additional preference: applicants who include a cover letter describing why they're a good fit for our school

Timing: Applications will be accepted until all positions are filled for the 2022-23 school year.
