The objective of the Melt Shop Process Engineer is to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of all improvement aspects within their area of responsibility. This is accomplished through the application of the available tools provided and improvement principles in conjunction with the use of technical and engineering principles. The Process Engineer will coordinate these activities directly with the appropriate Area Leader, area supervisors, and employees within his/her area of responsibility.

NATURE AND SCOPE

Qualifications for this position include a two to a four-year college degree in engineering, business administration, or related field – or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The incumbent should have a working knowledge of steel manufacturing methods and techniques involving the use of heavy mill machinery and related equipment. Previous qualifying experience on related work or lesser jobs of 4 – 6 years with practical training pertaining to scrap processing, melting, casting, and/or maintenance operations, and including some supervisory and facilitation experience. Demonstrates advanced knowledge of the business system and the use of complex technical and engineering processes.

This position reports directly to the appropriate Department Superintendent and will coordinate efforts with the different functional groups both within his/her area of responsibility and between other areas.

The Process Engineer identifies opportunities for improvement in process and production within the area of responsibility and develops and approves standards from these efforts. This could include designing and developing new or making alterations to existing structures, systems, and equipment.

The incumbent is responsible for developing and implementing activities that support the annual action plan including CAPEX projects and is responsible for all data collection and analysis as it pertains to tracking the goals of the projects. The incumbent is specifically involved in the coaching and development of employees within the area of responsibility as it pertains to the knowledge of QIS and improvement methodology. In order to perform this activity, the incumbent will be required to actively direct and participate in QIS and improvement events within the area.

The incumbent is responsible for assisting with safety-related activities within the area including safety hours, safety data entry, safety audit activities, and the promotion of the organization's goals for zero LTAs. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that all activities comply with all applicable environmental laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Principal Accountabilities:

Identify opportunities for improvement within his/her area of responsibility and approve standards developed from these efforts

Responsible for developing and implementing activities that support the annual action plan specifically as they relate to improvement projects

Design or develop new or alterations to existing structures, systems, and equipment

Provide timely and accurate cost estimates on proposed improvement efforts

Support and participate in CAPEX projects

Develop and coach employee's capabilities and knowledge in the application of QIS methodology and participate as required in QIS events

Participate and contribute to the achievement of department goals including goal setting

Serve as a resource to facilitate the vertical and horizontal help chain

Responsible for data entry into GMR and/or other systems utilized for tracking goals and projects
