Job Description Provides timely and quality clinical information and improved patient outcomes by accurately performing laboratory tests and procedures. Works effectively with others to meet the needs of the patients and care providers. Actively promotes a Lean work culture by performing team member duties to ensure consistent use of Lean principles and processes, including continually seeking work process improvements. Assists leadership team with administrative and technical support to proactively support the efforts that ensure delivery of safe patient care and services and to promote a safe environment at Children's.
Experience
- A minimum of five years previous experience in blood banking
- Pediatric experience
- A Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or a related science is required
- Certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP or equivalent)
- Eligible for classification as a supervisor by the Georgia Department of Human Resources
- Must have technical expertise for all procedures within a functional area
- Requires independent judgment and responsibility with minimum technical supervision
- Requires strong organizational capabilities, good communication skills and exhibits enthusiasm and willingness to work with others
General
1. Performs all representative activities and accountabilities as defined by the Transfusion Services Med Tech I and II job descriptions.
2. Performs assigned verification duties.
3. Designs, implements, and evaluates new procedures and updates existing procedures.
4. Understands and adheres to Lean principles and process such as standard work and maintaining 5S concept in work area realizing that all processes are driven by the needs of the customer.
5. Other duties as requested.
Technical
1. Establishes and monitors the standards of accuracy, precision, and efficiency in the performance of assays and or the operation of equipment, assists with evaluation and recommendation of new equipment.
2. Ensures the examination of reporting of patient and proficiency results for the Transfusion Tissue and Apheresis Services Department.
3. Accepts, resolves, or assists in the resolution of problems. Makes the decision to contact the Operation Supervisor/Manager if necessary. Updates the Operation Supervisor of all related issues.
4. Assesses the plausibility of testing results through correlation of data with common physiological conditions. Consult with the Medical Director(s) with specialty related questions.
5. Oversees specimen transfer for outside testing and/or consultation.
6. Oversees quality control and implements corrective action when indicated.
Administrative
1. Assists with staff schedule that maintains a minimum of two deep coverage and that operates within budgetary restraints.
2. Assists with reconciling billing as assigned.
3. Assists with auditing daily, weekly and monthly activity reports. Consults with Laboratory Quality Department on facilitating corrective actions as indicated.
4. Assists operations supervisor and manager with annual performance evaluations.
Training
1. Oversees the training, staff development, and or competency programs for the department. Communicates to the Operations Supervisor status of requirments.
2. Promotes a cooperative environment between new employees and staff providing a positive learning atmosphere.
3. Presents practical information to staff through various methods such as bench experience, shadowing, handouts, and case studies.
Instrument and Equipment
1. Oversees records of all instrument maintenance, whether performed in-house or under a service contract.
2. Notifies the supervisor of any instrument, calibration, or linearity issues.
3. Verifies that all daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance is performed and documented as scheduled.
4. Serves as the Transfusion Tissue and Apheresis Service department's instructor on issues concerning instrument function, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
5. Project manages the validation, precision, and correlation studies of new methods for existing and new instrumentation.
6. Performs or assists in all instrument troubleshooting.
7. Monitors instrument reagent and supplies inventories, in conjunction with the supervisors’ orders as necessary.
8. Works closely with Laboratory Quality to ensure that regulatory and quality processes are maintained.
9. Serves as the primary contact with instrument vendors regarding troubleshooting and interface issues.
10. Acts as the department liaison between appropriate laboratory information system representative regarding interface issues. As directed, develops and maintains expertise in interface software. Troubleshoots issues related to instrument interfaces associated with the Information Systems and EPIC.
