Job description

The Medical Director, Occupational Health, a newly created position, is responsible for the strategic planning related to departmental scope, services, procedures, and Administrator of Employee Health for Keck Medicine of USC and oversight of OCC Health needs at University of Southern California. This position will engage appropriate stakeholders (Employee Health, Safety, Human Resources, Chief Mental Health Officer, etc.) to incorporate best practices into operational processes regarding Employee Wellness and Employee/Occupational Health operation and oversite. In addition, the position includes medical evaluation and treatment of employees based medical surveillance programs and worker compensation initial treatment management.


Minimum Education: • Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. (*This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association, Association of American Colleges. Liaison Committee on Medical Education, Commission on Osteopathic) • College of Accreditation on the American Osteopathic Association or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. • Degree from Foreign Medical School: A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. *Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (external link), a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. Minimum Experience/Knowledge: • 3-5 years’ progressive leadership experience in complex academic medical centers, hospital, or health system. • Exhibit a substantive understanding of the important issues surrounding professional burnout in the arena of national academic health, hospitals, and healthcare systems. • Demonstrated expertise in negotiation, coaching, and interpersonal skills. • Excellent organizational, communication, program development, and planning skills. • Accomplished operational and strategic leader with direct administrative experience to include a broad understanding of complex health strategies and issues challenging the field of academic medicine. • Knowledge of rules, regulations, and guidelines of various Federal or state agencies governing safety programs. • Knowledge in conducting environmental health and safety audits. • Skill in listening to, synthesizing information, and reaching sound conclusions. • Skill in analyzing data for trends and needs. • Skill in recognizing hazardous situations and taking appropriate corrective action. • Skill in maintaining proper records and documentation. • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, and to relate to others in a professional, helpful manner including preparing and presenting reports to a variety of internal and external groups. • Ability to relate to a diverse population and to maintain composure when faced with difficult situations. • Ability to multi-task and organize, prioritize, and follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion with an attention to detail. • Ability to work independently while contributing to team environment. • Ability to effectively identify and resolve problems and to maintain strict confidentiality related to sensitive information. • Ability to analyze problems, identifies solutions, and takes appropriate action to resolve problems using independent judgment and decision-making processes. • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department staff, faculty, students, and the public. Required License/Certification: Licensure: • The contractor must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Board Certification: • Board Certified in Emergency Medicine, Occupational Medicine, or other Acute Care Specialty. • BLS – Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association • Fire and Safety Certification. If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire, and maintained by renewal before expiration date (Required within LA City only).
