Job Summary:

Provide Mechanical Finite Element Analysis support to engineering team on commercial and defense related products produced in RPO's molding processes. Produce finite element methods to support simulations for optical oxide glasses, chalcogenide glasses and transparent polymers. Utilize commercially available FEM software to develop analytical capabilities to support optical and mechanical lens design for current and future fabrication techniques. Investigate alternative optical materials for demonstrating thermal, flow and structural capabilities under molding and forming processes. Have a solid understanding of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid behavior when applying to optical materials under molding conditions.

Summary of Essential Job Duties:

  • 5-7 years of experience with MSC or Ansys finite element software with a concentration on advanced nonlinear simulation.
  • Generate models and simulations to predict glass behavior under various thermal and mechanical molding conditions.
  • Design and conduct molding experiments to validate and verify models/simulations
  • Demonstrate linear and nonlinearity analysis on structural and optical materials with commercially available FEA software.
  • Excellent communication skills need for presenting results to engineering group and non-technical management team.
  • A good working knowledge of Solid Works and/or NX CAD mechanical software
  • Have a solid understanding of GD&T principals and how to use them
  • Support mechanical group with high quality models and drawings of optical and mechanical systems using CAD application.
  • Knowledge of good manufacturing practices, ISO-9001, opto-mechanical principles.
  • A self-starter, capable of working with little direction or supervision and have the ability to follow procedures.
  • The ability to contribute as an individual and as a team member
  • Prior experience with optical and mechanical manufacturing process
  • Experience in tool design and fabrication techniques that will contribute in a hands on fashion with molding development


Requirements and Competencies:

Language Skills:

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret complex documents. Ability to communicate effectively to team members and management.


Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts.


Educational Requirements:

  • MS preferred, in the field of Mechanical Engineering with 5-7 years minimum experience in optical industry. BS is acceptable with minimum 7-10 years of experience in optical industry

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand: use hands to fingers, handle or feel: and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch: and talk and hear.
  • The job may involve prolong periods of sitting/standing.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. May involve prolonged periods of magnified inspection (eye strain)
  • Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp.
  • The employee is frequently required to use the computer.


Work Environment:

  • May involve the use of oils and solvents.
  • Subject to some soilage and irritation from cleaning solutions. (Lab Coats provided)
  • Generally works in a clean environment and works to maintain the environment as such.
  • Safety Glasses are required
  • May require area specific safety training
  • This position works in a manufacturing environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
  • The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne paper particles.
  • May work at different workstations as production needs require, or shifts from one station to another, during the production process.
