Position is Available Immediately after on-boarding.
Salary Commensurate with Experience
Job Summary: Garage Mechanics perform upkeep, repair, inspection, and preventative maintenance of the district bus fleet, as well as district trucks and other motorized equipment. All scheduling and planning are overseen by the Supervisor of Transportation and Lead Mechanic. Prepare and maintain related records as assigned, and other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS: To successfully perform this position, a person must be able to perform each primary duty satisfactorily. The qualification requirements listed below represent minimum levels of educational achievement, training, skills, and/or ability necessary.
- High School Diploma and Automotive/Bus Mechanic Training
- PA State Inspection license minimum Category 7 required
- Class B CDL with S and P endorsements
- Skilled in using diagnostic and computer software for repairs
- Air brake experience
- Electrical diagnostic experience
- Diesel engine experience
- School bus and/or light truck experience
- Familiarity with Cummins Insight diagnostics preferred
- Must successfully complete and maintain compliance with all federal and state background and criminal record check requirements.
- Candidates must adhere to all local, state, federal, and school code requirements for employment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Employee must have the ability to perform the following essential functions on a timely basis with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Plan and implement a program of scheduled preventative maintenance for the district bus fleet.
- Diagnose and perform mechanical repairs and routine services on the district fleet of motor vehicles, including, primarily school buses, but also vans, trucks, and other equipment.
- Perform routine required vehicle inspections.
- Make emergency service calls for stranded buses or other district equipment.
- Maintains vehicle functional condition by reviewing operator concerns/complaints.
- Prepare requisitions, order parts, and ensure parts are received in a timely manner.
- Estimate time, material, and equipment needed for assigned jobs.
- Make recommendations to the supervisor for ordering and stocking all necessary repair parts and necessary supplies.
- Contains costs by using warranty; evaluates service and parts options.
- Maintain the shop area in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
- Ability to have a flexible schedule to meet deadlines and report times when adjustments are required.
- Mechanics supply their own basic tools.
- Will be required to drive school bus routes when necessary.
- Maintains vehicle records by recording service and repairs.
- Keeps updated with current job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reviewing technical publications.
- Snow removal from property and vehicles.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Indoor/outdoor environment subject to changing temperatures exceeding 90 degrees at times.

- Occasional bending, kneeling, crouching, turning, and twisting.
- Occasional carrying, pushing or pulling boxes and engines.
- Crawling under vehicles.
- Clarity of vision at varying distances to observe diagnostic instruments, manuals, and other printed information.
- Verbal, auditory, and written capabilities to effectively communicate in an articulate manner.
- Perform physically demanding work.
- May require driving a vehicle to conduct work.
- Working with tools and powered machinery.
