Materials Engineer
Job Summary: The Materials Engineer will be knowledgeable on many plastic compounds and materials for use in injection molded products. The Materials Engineer will research new materials, with a focus on sustainable plastics, for the development of products entering into a circular economy post-production. They will identify new materials or material sources for manufacture of injection molded plastic parts and assist in the purchase of raw materials.
Hours Required: 40-45 hours/week
Materials Engineer Major Responsibilities
- Identify new materials suitable for use with new and existing injection molds
- Research material properties of existing and prospective materials, including bioplastics and recycled plastic materials.
- Ensure bioplastics and recycled materials have updated compliance documentation to allow for usage of sustainability claims.
- Create material property summaries for cross-functional review
- Advise product development and manufacturing teams on suitability of material for designed products and production tools
- Evaluate end-use of home plastic products after disposal to determine environmental impact, and identify opportunities to recycle product or otherwise reduce impact of product disposal
- Connect with material suppliers on current and upcoming product offerings
- Develop relationships with material suppliers to ensure multiple eligible material sources for production
- Analyze market trends for resin supply to ensure consistent supply of raw production material
- Perform risk analysis on any potential obstructions to supply of new or existing materials
- Assist in the development of testing protocols for new and existing materials
- Identify design opportunities to incorporate recycled and sustainable plastic materials
- Identify and complete projects through the HMS Sustainability Task Force
Skills Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Material Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent
- 5+ years industry experience in materials analysis and procurement
- Experience with injection molding processes preferred

- Long periods of work that primarily involves sitting
- Light work that includes moving objects up to 20 pounds
