Arthrex, Inc. is a global medical device company and a leader in new product development and medical education in orthopedics. Arthrex is actively searching for a Material Scientist to manage and maintain our engineering materials design data base to assure pour products and processes internally and externally meet specifications. They will build relationships with key customers and internal departments to help drive new product innovation and manage existing product lines. The ideal candidate will have at least 7 years’ experience in an engineering position at a medical device company, along with excellent interpersonal skills, hands-on experience developing testing solutions and solving problems related to metal and polymer materials and a Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgy or Material Science. Main Objective:
To manage and maintain engineering materials design data base to assure products and processes internally and externally meet specifications, improve product quality and performance as per specification and application function.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop and define internal engineering and quality processes to standardize and accelerate material evaluation and implementation.

Create material selection process for new and established product designs based upon material properties and function of application requirements.

Analyzing data sets and preparing professional assessments with solutions for applications.

Establish standards for process conditions such as heat treatment, welding, passivation, anodizing and laser marking.

Leading, advising and working as direct support on business unit led product design efforts.

Conducting technical literature reviews and keeping current on researching new technologies.

Establishing and maintaining an external academic research network for material development.

Attending relevant training workshops and conferences pertaining to materials in medical applications.

Coordinate and supervise external consultation as required on specific subject matter experts.

This role may require travel up to 10% of the time, some international.

Education and Experience:
Bachelors of Science degree in Metallurgy or Materials Science required, masters degree preferred

7 years industrial experience in engineering position in a Medical Device Company required

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

Ability to work effectively with a strong work ethic and close attention to detail in a fast-paced dynamic team environment.

Ability to interpret engineering models, drawings, specifications, written work instructions and test procedures.

Complete understanding and application of materials principles, concepts, practices and standards.

Knowledgeable of FDA and ISO guidelines for the development of medical devices required.

Manufacturing process knowledge of validated manufacturing processes for medical devices.

Education/Experience to include metallurgy, heat treatment, welding, surface treatments and polymer science.

Recognized expertise in at least two of the following fields: physical metallurgy, materials processing, metal forming, materials characterization, failure analysis, and materials joining.

Hands-on experience working in a metallurgical or materials laboratory setting. Specifically, experience developing unique testing solutions to solve problems.

Knowledgeable and experienced in both ferrous, non-ferrous metallurgy, and materials joining.

Knowledgeable and experienced in non metallics, ceramics and polymers preferred.

Hands-on experience working in a metallurgical or materials laboratory setting preferred.

Project management and communication skills training preferred.

Discretion/Latitude:
Work is performed under general direction.

Participates in determining objectives of assignment.

Plans schedules and arranges own activities in accomplishing objectives.

Work is reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives.

Equipment Skills:
Proficiency in the use of PC and programs, particularly MS Office (or equivalents if changed by the Company), PowerPoint, Visio, Minitab, Outlook and SAP or similar ERP software.
