Job description
The Environmental Assessment Program (EAP) within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Marine Monitoring Technician (Natural Resource Scientist 1) position. This position is located in our Headquarters Office in Lacey, WA. Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.
In this role, you will gain experience in multiple scientific disciplines, from oceanographic to zoological, providing multiple pathways for professional growth and development. Responsibilities include conducting field surveys, processing benthos and laboratory tasks, data entry and quality assurance, and contributing to report writing. The data collected are used to determine the status and trends of marine water and sediment quality in Washington State.
We are seeking applicants who have excellent attention to technical detail, possess the ability to work independently and take initiative, are flexible, team-orientated, and can communicate and work effectively with diverse audiences.

Tele-work options for this position at the present time, this position is not required to work a set number of days in the office. It is expected that this position will work both remotely as well in the office and at our Operations Center as determined by business needs and agreed upon schedule.

Our scientists are passionate about their work to measure, analyze, assess, interpret and communicate conditions of Washington’s marine environments over time. In this role, you will assist with marine water and sediment sampling operations, sample processing, and laboratory samples analysis using conventional techniques. Because this position includes concurrent work with multiple groups, it requires effective communication to schedule and prioritize tasks, but also allows for varied daily activities and opportunities for learning a variety of different skills.
What you will do:
Conduct specialized natural resource research in order to assess status and trends of water quality in Puget Sound and the coastal estuaries.- Perform laboratory analysis of marine water quality variables using standard oceanographic techniques.
- Using knowledge of marine benthic invertebrates, perform laboratory processing including benthic sorting, sorting quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC), and morphotyping of common and abundant species.
- Serve as a certified Ecology boat pilot, operating research vessels in support of Marine Monitoring Unit field operations by satisfying certification requirements within the first year of employment.
- Assist with maintaining laboratory, laboratory equipment, and supplies in clean working order.
- Assist field operations as a courier for transporting samples, instruments, and field staff.
Required Qualifications:
Option 1: A Bachelor’s of science degree with major study in marine ecology, marine benthic ecology, marine science, oceanography, or other closely allied marine science field AND Two years of professional research work experience in marine ecology, marine benthic ecology, marine science, oceanography, or water quality monitoring.
Option 2: A Master’s degree or a Ph.D. with a major study in marine ecology, marine benthic ecology, marine science, oceanography, or other closely allied marine science field.
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Must possess or obtain certification as an Environmental Assessment Program boat operator.
Desired Qualifications:
- Possess boating skills and knowledge.
- Experience conducting field sampling from a boat under a variety of conditions.
- Experience in collecting, processing, and analyzing marine sediment and benthic invertebrate samples.
