Marine Carpenter
Job Summary:
The Marine Carpenter will be responsible for planning, executing and completing a wide range of finish carpentry tasks aboard vessels. As a Marine Carpenter, you’ll bring a working knowledge of the materials and tools used to create various components of boats. This includes wood types, fasteners, adhesives, planners, saws, routers, and finishes, as well as the ability to use joinery techniques to assemble these elements.
Responsibilities:
- Repairs structural woodwork and replaces defective parts and equipment, using hand tools and power tools.
- Constructs floors, doors, and partitions, paneling, boxes, rails and trim using woodworking machines, hand tools, and power tools.
- Perform joinery work on vessels to fabricate and fit bulkheads, ceilings, windshield, windows, furniture, cabinets, desks, trims, handrails, cap rails and other marine related joinery work.
- Install prefabricated or custom parts such as hatches, marine hardware, metal trim and other parts.
- Perform carpentry projects aboard a variety of seasoned and newly constructed yachts and sportfishing vessels.
- Projects to range in scope and scale from one-off unit replacements to full interior / exterior refits.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 3 years’ carpentry experience.
- Skilled in the identification, recommendation, and use cases for a wide range of marine grade material selections.
- Knowledge of woodworking joints in the marine industry.
- Capable in the layout and execution of industry standard joinery, including but not limited to scarf, lap, finger, dovetail, mortise, miter, box, and bridle joints.
- Proficient in field measurements and computations utilizing tape measure, square, lasers, trammels, plumb bobs, etc. Is adept with shop math and geometry.
- Has experience reading and interpreting blueprints. Able to complete work from plans, concept renderings, and verbal description.
- Candidates should be familiar with the parts and processes required for servicing of stairs, partitions, subfloors, frameworks, doors, paneling, trim, weather stripping, hardware, locks, hinges, knobs, vents, overheads, valences, counters, rails, cabinets, benches, tables, teak decking, cap rails, rub rails, plenums, insulation, flooring, etc.
- Able to operate, service, and maintain a wide range of hand and power tools.
- Knowledge and experience in the application and use of epoxy and vinyl ester resins, adhesives, bonding agents, solvents, caulk, and finishes.
