Reporting to the Communications Director, the Communications Manager is a demanding and high-profile position responsible for driving strategic communications supporting Central Maine Power’s business objectives with external stakeholders and employees. The position will also work closely with parent company representatives (AVANGRID) headquartered in Orange, CT. Main areas of responsibilities include media relations, internal communications, social media, and some varying communications.
Partners with key stakeholders to achieve timely execution of all programs/efforts. Monitors industry and discipline trends, tools, and technologies and implements innovative traditional, event, and social/on-line marketing initiatives.
Responsibilities
1. Responsible for building image and company reputation working in collaboration with all necessary departments and business functions.
2. Responsibilities also include a focus on other communications related to company positioning, strategic initiatives, and executive level support.
3. Assists in management of external communications including developing press releases, interacting with media, preparing executives for media interviews, and a variety of other projects, including internal and external events, etc.
4. Assists in crisis communications management and adept at managing complex and sensitive business issues.
5. Responsible for working with employees at all levels throughout the organization and is relied upon to provide decisive recommendations and strategic counsel as needed.
6. Responsible for a range of internal communications tasks spanning the entire organization.
7. Develops and maintains positive professional relationships with management and builds effective relationships with influencers and key stakeholders
8. Develops a wide variety of executive communications for all levels of leadership across the business.
9. Collaborates with other Corporate Communications team members to coordinate the flow of consistent digital, print and video communications to employees.
10. Works with the AVANGRID social media team to leverage internal content, as appropriate.
11. Supports and helps to develop a comprehensive content calendar and adheres to deadlines.
12. The Manager may, at times, serve as a representative in several capacities, including making statements to the media, either giving (or media training other senior executives for) interviews and serving as gatekeeper for any and all company information that is to be disclosed to the public.
13. The position requires the ability to help quickly facilitate media requests, including but not limited to, specific questions on performance, executives, strategy, products, policies, and historical perspectives, among others.
Skills and Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree required (Master's Degree preferred) with a minimum of 6 years relevant experience preferred.
- Thorough understanding of communications strategy and be able to handle external communications and media relations.
- Superior writing and editing skills for all forms of communication needs and detailed information for senior executives.
- Knowledge of the electric and gas industry a plus.
- Superior verbal and written communication skills, writing, and editing.
- Strong strategic and analytical capability.
- Strong ability to work with and influence senior leaders and other key stakeholders throughout the company on communications opportunities and issues.
- Ability to multi-task and quickly prioritize projects and work under pressure and tight deadlines.
- Self-starter, independent worker, strong team and cross-functional collaborator.
- Create, maintain, and foster relationships with key media, both traditional and digital, business, and trade.
- Requires a high level of strategic thinking, creativity, comfort with digital/social media and superior attention to detail.
- Ability to function as spokesperson, as needed, both taped and live media interviews in positive and negative situations.
- Ability to make reasonably quick, well-informed strategic decisions.
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift to 15 pounds at times.
