BoSTEM is an initiative of the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley. As part of the United Way's commitment to giving young children a solid foundation and preparing youth for success in life, BoSTEM initiatives seeks to unite with communities to provide career-inspiring opportunities to underrepresented youth. Several ways in which BoSTEM provides career inspiration is through high-quality learning opportunities through STEM Chats and Bites. The initiative works with out-of-school time programs and with corporate volunteers to offer experiential learning with industry professionals and externships. BoSTEM provides STEM learning opportunities, tips and tricks for home learning, and other engaging pieces of information through blogs, maker pop up fairs, and social media. BoSTEM is seeking Maker Fellows who want to support our program initiatives and goals of strengthening partnerships throughout our community. Fellows will also coordinate and run community events for students and families. Maker Fellows develop and support the development and dissemination of resources to underserved and underrepresented communities by providing STEM activities to our growing network of local educators and families to help inspire and engage students. As a Maker Fellow, you will join a cohort of 20 AmeriCorps VISTA members placed at leading organizations across the country and participate in a year-long structured and collaborative learning pathway. Benefits include a living stipend of $26,724.88/year, a $500/month housing stipend, a Segal Education Award of $6,195 upon successful completion or end of year cash stipend of $1,800, healthcare coverage, and child care subsidy. Member Duties : This program will connect K-12 students to maker-centered learning opportunities that help students build the academic and social emotional skills key to their success in school, postsecondary enrollment and workforce placement. Maker Fellows, through service in their local communities and participation in targeted professional development, will become life-long leaders and champions of maker-centered learning and mentorship for under-served students. Maker-centered learning provides a unique chance for students to explore the real world through designing, hacking, building, and experimenting, through the use of digital design and fabrication technologies and makerspaces. Fellows work in capacity building roles and support direct programming, such as developing and enhancing new maker-centered learning programming, partnering with school districts to redesign high school CTE pathways and supporting the development of local communities of practice for faculty and educators.
