Immediate Supervisor: Structural Supervisor


General Description:


The Maintenance Worker performs complex semi-skilled work supervising and participating in the care and maintenance of designated equipment throughout Richmond Public Schools. This work includes fixing and maintaining mechanical equipment, buildings, machines, and plumbing. It also involves painting, flooring repair and upkeep, electrical repairs, and heating and air conditioning system maintenance.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs maintenance on heating equipment, portable or stationary air conditioning units, electrical or electronic systems and equipment, water and wastewater plumbing systems, and sheet metal products
  • Ensures that appropriate supplies, equipment and tools are available at work site to complete assignments
  • Ensures work is completed correctly, in a timely manner, and in compliance with departmental performance standards and applicable building codes
  • Keeps required logs and prepares oral and written reports, work orders, tool and equipment requisitions
  • Sets up and operates all types of machine tools in the mechanical trades
  • Lubricates and cleans parts
  • Drives vehicle to and from work site, performs routine servicing and loads and unloads tools and equipment
  • Performs other maintenance related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of two years of experience performing semi-skilled maintenance work
  • Excellent knowledge of the methods, procedures, tools and equipment of the maintenance trade and applicable local, state, and national codes
  • Ability to perform assigned tasks and to make independent judgments and decisions within established policies
  • Ability to learn the skill of interpreting and applying work orders, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, and manufacturer’s manuals
  • Possess good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to practice and enforce applicable safety regulations
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to perform essential functions
  • Strength and dexterity necessary to perform all required tasks, including moving and transporting equipment and supplies to place where work is to be performed
  • Possess valid Virginia Operator’s License with a good driving record
