General Maintenance Worker


NATURE OF WORK

Since the Avery County School System is small, an employee working in maintenance is required to have knowledge of several areas of maintenance. The employee is given specific instructions for work to be done. Employees at this level require little supervision. Employee will perform several duties in the maintenance and repair of electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures; in the maintenance, repair, and installation of water and waste disposal systems, and perform all levels of carpentry with emphasis on finish work where appearance is as important as the integrity of structure. The employee must have the ability to regularly lift to 40 pounds and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds. All work is done under assignment and supervision of the Director of Auxiliary Services.


ELECTRICIAN

Assignment


This is skilled work in the installation, alteration, maintenance and repair of electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • This is skilled work at the journeyman level in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical fixtures and accessories.
  • Employee does skilled work in accordance with standard practices of the electrical trade. Employees are allowed considerable latitude in determining methods of work procedures. Instructions relating to work assignments may be oral or written, and may be accompanied by sketches, blueprints, and electrical diagrams.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs heaters, fans, circulating pumps, electrical machinery and equipment, and other electrical equipment.
  • Repairs flashers units, time clocks, relays, switches, control boxes, fuse boxes and floor scrubbers.
  • Installs and makes repair to electrical motors, controllers, switchboard panels, lights; locates and corrects power failures and motor trouble on electrically operated machinery and apparatus.
  • Performs related work as required.


Work Situation

Work usually performed indoors but may be out of doors. Frequently required to work in close confined spaces.


PLUMBER


Assignment

  • This is skilled work at the journeyman level in the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing fixtures and accessories.
  • Incumbent does skilled work requiring the application of standard trade practices in maintaining and installing a variety of plumbing systems and fixtures.
  • Assignments come in oral or written form, sometimes accompanied by sketches, from a Leader or similar technical supervisor. Work is inspected during process and upon completion for workmanship, compliance with instructions and specifications, and for adherence to regulatory codes.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Cuts openings in walls for pipes; bends pipes over blocks by hand, cuts, reams and threads pipe.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs valves, faucets, traps, sinks, wash bowls, sewers, vents, and other sanitary fixtures.
  • Maintains piping systems by opening clogged drains with a plunger or other device; replaces washers on leaky faucets; tests for leaks by filling pipe with water under pressure and checking with a gauge for a fall in pressure.
  • Makes estimates of time and material; directs the work of helpers assisting in various phases of the work.
  • Performs related work as required.

Duties may be performed indoors or out of doors. Situations are frequently under dirty conditions and confined spaces.


HVAC


Assignment


This is skilled work in the installation, cleaning, adjusting, and repairing of HVAC systems.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Installing, maintaining, and repairing ventilation and air conditioning systems and equipment.
  • Diagnosing electrical and mechanical faults for HVAC systems.
  • Cleaning, adjusting, and repairing systems.
  • Identifying maintenance risks on equipment and performing emergency repairs promptly and efficiently.
  • Employee does skilled work in accordance with the standard practices of the HVAC trade and ensuring compliance with appliance standards and with Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Employee is required to be EPA certified and HVAC 1, 2, or 3 is preferred.
