Performs advanced (senior-level) restoration, renovation, building maintenance and construction work in a designated skilled trade. Work involves renovation, restoration, alteration, making inspections, adjustments, installations, maintaining and repairing buildings, utility systems, and stationary equipment, dependent on the trade and operating motorized equipment, requisitioning material and supplies; and maintaining records. Process paperwork related to work orders, projects and material requisitions. Performs training, assigns, and/or prioritizes the work of others. Works under minimal supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Performs other duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
1. Performs inspections, adjustments, maintenance and repair work in accordance with recognized codes and standards on building systems for various trades such as associated with the assembly, installation, repairs, of doors, door locks and door hardware, including all the gates for the perimeter fencing. Maintains, tests, troubleshoots and repairs all components associated with the fire alarm and fire sprinkler systems, carpentry, painting and electrical, to ensure proper maintenance and repair. Demonstrates the use of hand tools and/or equipment while performing repairs or inspections. Evaluates work to be performed and determines the best method for performing maintenance and repair work.
2. Performs repairs and renovations to modernize a building, building system or adapt it to new uses. Designs projects to conform to applicable codes and standards. Identifies necessary information such as time and physical location. Identifies necessary materials and assembly details. Ensures that the necessary tools and manpower are available to perform the work. Makes in-process inspections to ensure the job is being done properly.
3. Selects appropriate material to replace and repair building or building systems. Recognizes failures in the operation of the equipment. Correctly identifies the cause of the system or equipment failure and identifies the necessary corrective action.
4. Acts as a lead worker on construction, maintenance or repair projects. Establishes work schedules, assigns appropriate staff, and oversees repairs or renovations needed.
5. Maintains safe and uninterrupted services to campus operations and programs systems. Recognizes improper operation and deterioration of the system. Establishes a need for repairs and adjustments.
6. Uses hand tools, power tools, and tests safety equipment as necessary.
7. Accurately processes paperwork and maintains records on work orders, projects and material requisitions.
8. Operates machinery such as backhoes, forklifts, etc. as necessary. Demonstrates the use of machinery as needed.
9. Trains others on the proper procedures and methods for repairs or inspections. Maintains training records for staff.
10. Operates and maintains motorized vehicles and equipment.
11. Provides inspections on work performed by contractors to ensure contract compliance.
12. Completes requisitions for materials and equipment, maintains records of the materials used, calculates the amount of materials needed and the cost of labor, and orders parts and supplies needed to complete work orders.
13. Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge of the repair, maintenance, and operations of buildings, building systems and grounds.
Knowledge of industrial safety, fire and safety regulations.
Maintains, assembles, installs, repairs, all doors, door locks and door hardware, including all the gates for the
perimeter fencing. May work with outside vendors when applicable.
Maintains, tests, troubleshoots and repairs all components associated with the fire alarm and fire sprinkler systems. May work with outside vendors when applicable
Skill in the use of hand tools, power tools, and test equipment
Skill in preventative maintenance and inspections of buildings and building systems.
Ability to perform maintenance, to follow instructions, estimate materials; to apply proper methods, techniques
and procedures in the maintenance and repair of buildings, building and utility systems.
Ability to interpret drawings, schematics, or sketches.
Ability to organize preventive maintenance programs.
Ability to work independently or with a team.
Must possess valid Texas driver’s license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out-of-state driver’s license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.
1. High School Diploma or GED.
2. 5 years experience in working an organized maintenance environment.
3 Supervisory experience in an organized maintenance environment is preferred.
4. Welding experience (mig, tig, arc) is preferred.
5. General knowledge of mechanical and electro-mechanical equipment is preferred
Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, and HHS OIG list of Excluded Individuals/Entities. Males between the ages of 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service.

Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, healthcare workers are considered to be at significant risk for acquiring or transmitting hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), and influenza. All of these diseases are vaccine-preventable. As a result, state hospital policy requires employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with individuals. In the event you choose to not be immunized for the influenza virus, you may be required to wear a mask and take other protective measures.
