Position Overview

Under supervision of facilities Director, the Maintenance Mechanic will maintain assigned tasks: repairs furniture and the structural integrity of buildings and electrical systems, and responds to other emergency maintenance requests as needed. The Maintenance Mechanic will work on projects that require a level of precision, involving exposure to chemical, loud noises, and equipment that is both automatic and manual. The Maintenance Mechanic is expected to follow employee safety standards by adhering to both environment and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.

Essential Job Functions

  • Ensures all day programs are ready for standardized surveys.
  • Visits and assess properties, completes work orders, and documents all to ensure the safety and health of individuals and employees.
  • Plunges toilets and ensures plumping is properly working.
  • Repairs broken sinks, toilets, and other plumbing equipment.
  • Ensures breaker is properly working when an electric issue arises.
  • Inspects, repairs, and installs electrical equipment/appliances, light switches, light fixtures, and light bulbs.
  • Transports furniture and other equipment.
  • Paints walls and exteriors/interior of buildings.
  • Troubleshoots mechanical issues in equipment/appliances.
  • Performs inspection and basic HVAC repairs.
  • Collaborates with other maintenance workers to determine the best course of action for required tasks.
  • Ensure that all walkways, entryways, driveways and parking lots are shoveled or plowed at FREE’s properties to avoid injuries during emergency inclement weather.
  • Keeps logs of all maintenance work and reports updates to Facilities Director.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Addresses and communicates emergency situations according to established policies and procedures in a timely fashion.
  • Provides coverage in emergency situations until relieved of the responsibility.
  • Observes Agency Policy and procedures for building security and identification of authorized personnel.
  • Exercises awareness of safety hazards to both employees and consumers.
  • Repairs sheetrock, spackles, and paint as needed.
  • Repairs locks and security systems within day program sites as needed.
  • Ensures the safety of all consumers present at the work sites.
  • Adheres to all prescribed safety regulations; follow procedures for careful handling of materials, tools and equipment, under OSHA.
  • Reports all safety violations to the Facilities Director.
  • Ensure that water temperature and fire extinguishers in all assigned day program sites operate per agency regulations.
  • Assist in maintaining Agency day program properties in a neat, orderly and safe manner, and report all repairs needs in a timely manner as per program specific needs.
  • Ability to respond quickly and calmly to emergency requests.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education, Work Experience, and Competencies

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Valid NYS Driver License and satisfy criteria to be a driver for FREE preferred.
  • Some experience in maintenance field or mechanical repair work preferred.
  • Must have knowledge and experience in the operation of power equipment and machines.
  • Knowledge of wall board repair and painting.
  • Strong background in carpentry, plumbing and installing sheet rock.
  • Basic knowledge in electricity.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Must be flexible.
  • Works well as a team player.

Physical Demands / Work Environment

  • Work may be performed either inside or outside according to maintenance requests.
  • Temperatures may vary according to season and specific work site.
  • Time will be spent in workrooms, offices, and day program sites.
  • Employee is required to sit, walk and stand for prolonged period of time (at least 8 hours).
  • Must be physically fit for lifting and carrying heavy objects.
  • Employee is required to reach with hands and arms.
  • Employee is required to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb or stand on a stool as needed.
  • Tasks may involve moderate to heavy physical labor.
  • Employee is required to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Minor travel from one local site to another may be required.
