POSITION: Custodian/Maintenance
DEPARTMENT: Maintenance
SALARY: $1,710.65 biweekly
Incumbent serves as Custodian for the Maintenance Department, responsible for maintaining cleanliness of County facilities, and ordering and maintaining inventory of cleaning supplies.
DUTIES :
Cleans facilities, including, but not limited to, dusting/polishing furniture, walls, doors, benches, woodwork, cleaning floor mats, washing windows, windowsills, sweeping, mopping floors, maintaining stairways, and vacuuming carpets. Refinishes hard surface floors and collecting recycle items.
Cleans and disinfects restrooms, including, but not limited to, disinfecting and cleaning urinals, toilets, sinks, checking, refilling products, soap dispensers, washing walls, mirrors, sweeping/mopping floors, and emptying trash cans. Uses drain cleaner to prevent or free clogged drains.
Inspects facilities and related equipment to identify problems and determine maintenance and repairs needed. Cleans and maintains custodial equipment, process laundry for other facilities, and post event signage.
Ensures exterior garbage area and interior recycle areas are kept clean and clear of safety hazards.
Cleans spills and messes caused by County personnel and the public.
Maintains communications with supervisors concerning projects and assists projects as needed.
Travels to other facilities to cover staffing needs.
Maintains records of fire inspections.
Assists in evacuating personnel and public from facilities when fire alarm is activated. Resets alarm system as needed for false alarms.
Maintains inventory of cleaning supplies for night Custodians, restocking items as needed to ensure adequate supplies are available.
Sets up and dismantles furniture for meetings/special events. Transports furniture, boxes, and other items for interdepartmental moves within buildings or properties.
Maintains security of facility, making sure doors are secured during working hours.
Performs related duties as assigned.
I. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGES :
High school diploma or GED preferred.
Assisting to meet all department hiring requirements, including passing background check.
Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of basic cleaning, sanitation, and safety policies and procedures and universal health precautions, and ability to ensure safety of self and others.
Ability to understand and follow oral instructions, work orders, material safety data sheets, and product application directions, such as cleaning solutions.
Ability to operate a variety of hand and/or power tools and equipment, including hammer, screw drivers, wrenches, mops, brooms, steam cleaner, vacuum, carpet cleaner, leave blower, manlift, extractors, scrubbers, and buffers.
Ability to physically perform essential duties of the position, including exerting sustained physical effort, bending/reaching, crouching/kneeling, handling/grasping/fingering objects, sitting/walking at will, standing/walking for long periods, pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds, close/far vision, depth perception, speaking clearly, and hearing sounds/communications.
Ability to work on several task at the same time and work rapidly for long periods, occasionally under time pressure.
Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.
Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral.
Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate/hostile persons.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, and the public including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
Ability to occasionally works extended hours.
II. RESPONSIBILITY :
Incumbent duties according to schedules and/or supervisor instructions. Assignments guided by definite objectives using a variety of methods or procedures. Incumbent plans and arranges own work and refers to supervisor for unusual matters.
Incumbent reports directly to Executive Maintenance Director.
III. PHYSICAL EFFORT ;
Incumbent physically perform essential duties of the position, including exerting sustained physical effort, bending/reaching, crouching/kneeling, handling/grasping/fingering objects, sitting/walking at will, standing/walking for long periods, pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds, close/far vision, depth perception, speaking clearly, and hearing sounds/communications.
IV. WORKING CONDITIONS :
Incumbent performs duties in office buildings and outdoors, working with or near potentially hazardous cleaning chemicals, working in wet/icy surroundings, work near fumes, odors, dust, dirt, work in high places such as ladders and roofs, wear protective clothing or equipment, for which safety/health precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self and others. Incumbent may be exposed to irate/violent individuals. Incumbent may respond to situations involving potential physical harm to self and others.
