Skagit Valley College (SVC) is currently accepting applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible Maintenance Custodian. Hours of work are typically Monday through Friday, 4:00 pm – 12:30 am, which includes a shift premium of $174 per month. During the summer, this position may work an adjusted shift. This work schedule is subject to change according to business needs. The Maintenance Custodian will perform routine maintenance in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, mechanical and related work on buildings, facilities, and equipment as well as custodial duties to maintain the cleanliness and care of the college facilities.
This is a full-time, benefits and retirement-eligible classified position at the Mount Vernon Campus. This position will work under the general supervision of the Custodian Supervisor.
Nestled between the Cascade Mountains and Puget Sound in the northwest corner of Washington State, Skagit Valley College is located 60 miles north of Seattle and 80 miles south of Vancouver, BC. SVC was established in 1926 in Mount Vernon. Operating as one college with several campuses and centers, SVC serves Skagit, Island, and San Juan Counties with campuses in Mount Vernon and Oak Harbor, centers in Friday Harbor and Langley, and a Marine Manufacturing and Technology Center in Anacortes.
Skagit Valley College adheres to a set of guiding principles:
- Repair classroom equipment, office furniture (desks, chairs, pencil sharpeners, etc.), hardware, locks, and custodial equipment;
- Perform minor repairs on plumbing and clogged drains;
- Perform minor repairs on electrical circuits;
- Repair or replace lights, fixtures, and ballasts; Perform minor carpentry work;
- Paint offices, classrooms, restrooms, and patch holes in walls as required;
- Hang equipment and materials on walls; Perform minor repairs on partitions;
- Perform routine scheduled maintenance work on facilities and equipment;
- Change filters and perform periodic maintenance on HVAC systems;
- Report defective fixtures or equipment to appropriate personnel;
- Mop and wax floors; Clean and sanitize restrooms and shower facilities (toilets, sinks, fixtures, floors, showers, etc.);
- Wash interior and exterior windows and entrance doors;
- Empty trash/waste baskets and recycle containers;
- Sweep, dust, vacuum, and clean hallways, offices, classrooms, entryways, and sidewalks;
- Review inventory of supplies and materials for assigned building and request supplies as needed;
- Move or rearrange classroom furniture and equipment, and move and set up furniture for special events;
- Pressure wash sidewalks, buildings, and other exterior surfaces;
- Deliver supplies and materials;
- Prioritize work orders and complete assignments with minimal supervision and in a timely manner;
- Assure that building doors and windows are locked, alarms are set, and lights are turned off;
- Report unsecured areas and unauthorized occupants to appropriate personnel;
- Maintain, repair, and operate truck mount carpet machine;
- May mix chemicals and maintain or refill dilution control units in custodial areas;
- May drive college vehicles between campus buildings to carry trash, recycle, furniture, and custodial equipment;
- May shovel snow, apply ice melt compounds, operate power snow removal equipment;
- May instruct other personnel in routine maintenance or custodial techniques;
- May perform as a leader in a team situation when covering open areas and on large-scale operations.
Knowledge and understanding of:

- Routine maintenance procedures;

- Safety procedures for custodial and regular maintenance;
- Safety procedures for handling blood-borne pathogens.
- Perform minor electrical repairs and replacements;
- Perform minor plumbing repairs and replacements;
- Perform minor carpentry repairs on buildings;
- Perform repairs on building mechanical systems;
- Perform equipment repairs;
- Operate hand and power tools related to custodial and maintenance duties;
- Perform a variety of custodial cleaning techniques;
- Work effectively as a member of a team;
- Read and write English;
- Follow written and verbal instructions;
- Prioritize work; Work with limited supervision;
- Work with a diverse group of individuals.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of the equivalent of one (1) year of full-time experience performing routine maintenance work including minor facilities and equipment repair and the equivalent of at least one (1) year of full-time custodial experience.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications:
- Custodial experience working in a college or public school environment.
- Salary is based on Range 34, Step A, $2,827 per month with periodic increments to Step L, $3,650 per month. Starting salary may be dependent on education, qualifications, and experience. Salary and benefits are subject to change in accordance with legislative mandates and collective bargaining agreements. Salary is prorated for positions less than 100% full-time.
- This position is eligible for overtime pay in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act and is dependent upon continued grant funding.
- This is a union-represented position subject to a collective bargaining agreement.

- This classification is included in the classified staff bargaining unit, represented by the Washington Public Employees Association, WPEA. Membership in the WPEA within thirty (30) calendar days of appointment at this classification is a requisite for employment at Skagit Valley College under union shop requirements.
